of that entire list, the ones I highlighted are either prototypes or have seen only limited use in combat (not sure about the Steyr SUG, did you mean AUG?). In fact, of the ones that you picked only the AR15 has seen extensive action (as the M16 obviously).

As for picking the best, only weapons that have proved themselves should be considered, considering that the only rifles listed with a good history of use are the AK47 & the M16 (and , I guess the SA80), so I'd take the M16 20" flat top.

(Spelling Police special deputy on call.)

+1 for a rail gun - if you could make a repeating version, either magazine, belt, or hopper fed...

and keep it cool enough...

and generate enough power for it...

and keep from laughing yerself silly while yer blowin' holes in the world!

In this world? I'd say it depends too much on mission specific details to give a single answer. Things like loadout, resupply, mobile or stationary, urban v. jungle v. arctic v. desert; close-in or "reach out".. little things, really

That would seem to me to fit the description of a light machine gun since it is not chambered in a intermedite cartridge.

I am going to go with the M16, but any of the listed rifles would do fine.

IMI TAR sucks ass. Do you have any personal experience with it? No? Thought so. The USMC and USAF tried a few because they were looking at interim weapons before getting the XM8 (Which itself is up in the air right now due to several failures and HK's inability to meet the requirements) and they found it to be just decent but not worth the sheetmetal they were made of.

IMHO, the Valmet Sako 95 assault rifle is the finest infantry weapon ever made.

The close second is the SIG 55X series of rifles.

Third comes the Swedish AK5 family.

Hey dumbfuck from TN, you prick. The AK47 has seen more action than the AR15. Also, the SA80 has seen the IRA, the Iraqis, Kosovo, etc. But it still sucks... haha! Also, the FAMAS has killed its fair share of people in Cote d' Ivore, Afghanistan (yes, that's right...), and some other locations... (Haiti comes to mind). Lastly, the G36 has seen action... Kosovo, Macedonia (yup...), and Afghanistan.

This makes sense to me. That's one of the reasons I would chose the M4A1. It's what I have experience with.

Funny story, not funny 'ha,ha' funny strange. I was in the Persian Gulf and the British sailors wanted to trade magazines. They wanted our Al mags, while we wanted steel mags. The grass is always greener, I guess.
