It's thickest under the jaw on the sides, then the chin. The cheeks are the thinnest, and the sideburn area is next-to thinnest.

Goatee and sideburn are thickest, thinnest is just behind mouth for about 1/2 inch, then thickens back up. All below jaw line is thick....

But I shave it anyway....

Exactly the same here, except my sideburns are thinner than my cheeks. When the hair under my jaw gets too long, that's when it's time to trim.
