A guy at work ask this and I could not give him a good answer.
Why do right handed shooters want semiautomatic rifles to eject out of the right side of the gun?

Um, so the shells don't hit you in the face...

For the same reason lefties want a left hand ejection. It keeps the spent brass outta your face.

So the empty (hot) cases don't thwack you in the face. They go over your shoulder.

Because a right handed shooter will have the weapon shouldered on his right side.  Having the brass eject out the right side throws it away from the body.

Having the brass eject out of the left would throw hot brass across your chest/face.

Shooting a pistol with a normal stance I don't see it as an issue.

Edit - there were no replies when I started typing.  Fuckin' quick draw McGraws around here.

Exactly, although depending on the rifle this may not be an issue.

Because, being right-eye dominant, you can actually aim your brass to try to peg the guy next to you on the line. Ideally you want to drop one in between his glasses and his face. It takes a lot of practice.

Happened on more than one occasion!

Um,  ok.  When I shoot my “righty” AR15 left-handed I don’t get hit in the face.  Never had the problem with shotguns or any other semi except a para P12 with a weak spring that use to throw the rounds in my face.

Is this a real problem with the AR15 or just something that is nice to have?

If you're getting hit in the face with handgun brass, I don't care which-handed you are, you're not holding it right.

+1

You are limp wristing a handgun if you are dinging yourself with casings....

Or possibly holding it "Boyz in Da Hood" style.

Uh, no.

I need to check my ejector, but on my Para P12 I get dinged in the face all the time. It's the ejector more than likely.

I hold it right, do not limp wrist, and have never held it gangsta style.

Most newer ARs have a shell deflector built into the upper receiver to keep it from being a problem for lefties.  It's the triangular thing that sticks out just behind the edjection port:

Or you're using weak ammo.  I've shot cheapie ammo or factory reloads that "dribble" out of the gun, or eject just far enough to land on your head.  Real ammo ejects normally in the same guns.

I always made a habit to aim for the collar and hope it goes down the back.

In other words, most actions don't spit the brass at a 90 degree angle in relation to the firearm, they end up coming backwards also.
