A body of an insurgent lies in a Baghdad street near an exploded mortar. The militant was killed along with his colleague while they were trying to fire mortar rounds towards a US and Iraqi National Guard base in Iraqi war-torn capital. Witnesses said the mortar rounds exploded and killed the insurgents.(AFP/Str)

Yeah, but it's only the 40 caliber ones you have to worry about....the 9 mil and 45 cal mortars are just fine.

Hmmmm....Do you think the catastrophic failure was accidental... -or- did we "help"?
I really hope we helped. We should supply more ammo, not  just mortar rounds, everything!
For example: IIRC a std RPG-7 round's motor burns out @ about 800 metres and the round auto-detonates. Imagine how twitchy these murderous SOBs would get if we introduced a large number of rounds designed to "burn out" at, oh, say 2 metres. Auto suppressing RPG gunners, the wave of the future!

How big do you think that tube is?
Could we start "instructing" them that if they run out of one size thay can wrap duct tape aaround a smaller one and use it?

Or, get a contractor to "rework" some rounds and leave them where they were found?

What was the name of the SOG operation during Vietnam?

Orange blossom or something like that. I know they issued warnings to ally troops not to use enemy ammunition. C4 doesn't make a good powder substitute.

'cause lots of our Iraqi allies, AND even US forces, are using battlefield "pick ups".... introduce those kind of rounds, and there's a good chance that at some point they will make their way back into the hands of the good guys.

I'm pretty sure that's an Soviet 82mm Mortar, but I ain't no expert...just ducked a few now and again.

FWIW, These "Insurgents" are the Wiley E. Coyote of Combat Arms, IMHO they "self-destruct" about 25% of the time when trying to emplace IED's and rig not-so-smart bombs. I'll ask a few 11C's (Infantry Indirect Fire Specialists) that I know for a more learned opinion about this......

isnt there a pin that you have to hold on to while dropping the round in when the round pops out of the tube the pin flies of?
