| Not having such a good day. Brought my car to get the oil changed and turns out the gas tank was leaking. Mechanic tells me if I dont get it fixed they are required to inform the police and I wont be able to drive my car. $100 just to take the tank off and see what the problem is. Apparently the tank was leaking at the seam and needs to be replaced. Not only that but the fuel lines were rotted and need to be replaced. So Im looking at about $500 worth of work and a day without a car. Should have just changed the damn oil myself. I hate cars. |
Had the same thing happen to my old bronco 6 years ago and it set me back $500 as well. The story behind it was we were celebrating college graduation and having a keg party. Well I was on the balcony of my apartment filling a cup when I smelled gas really bad. People were flicking their butts over the balcony and I had a helluva time to get them to stop. Lucky they didn't blow up the place. |
They are theives and liars. Dont go there again. You could leave and they can call the friggin CIA for all you care. Tell em to change the oil and then leave. Check into the other problems yourself. Why did they take the tank of in the first palce to see what the problem was? You shouldnt have paid the $100 for the extra unwanted work. And anytime a mechanic tells you that you will be reported to the cops for driving your vehicle is full of it. "Its a Trap" They saw you comming a mile away. |
Well if they call the cops and the cops tow my car Im rpetty Fed. I know I could have taken it somewhere else to get it fixed but I would have had to get it towed. |
No you wouldnt. If you could have driven it in you should be able to drive it out. Or did they disable your vehicle somehow? You got screwed. |
Well apparently the state of FL has deemed that a car leaking gas is a hazard and the cops will stop you from driving it. |
|
If they were doing all of this to cover their asses, they could just draft up a waiver saying they informed you and they are not responsible for your car you decided to not fix. I say take it to a different shop to get a second opinion and to give someone else the business, they don't deserve it after saying they're going to call the police. |
Yeah that's a scam-maybe you really needed the work done, but the calling the cops stuff is a scam. Fraud Hotline: 1-866-9-NO-SCAM (1-866-966-7226) (toll free within Florida) myfloridalegal.com/pages.nsf/4492d797dc0bd92f85256cb80055fb97/030e31f06ef0184d85256cc600706904!OpenDocument |
You got owned by one of the oldest plays. Come in for a minor problem. They take it upon themsleves to find more. Disable your car, tell you they legally cant let you drive it. Yup you just got owned. Sorry but you go ahead and defend them all you want. Its your $$ and lack of vehicle. Was just trying to help but obviously some people like it when they get bent over at the mechanic. |
Well Id say a leaking gas tank is a pretty serious problem any way you slice it. I obviously need it to be fixed. ETA: They didnt disbale my car in any way and they didnt say they wouldnt let me leave. They just said they were required to call the cops. For something as serious as gas leaking out of a car I wouldnt doubt if it IS a law. |
A mechanic can find ANY important problem if he wants to. Why did they take the gas tank off? Did you authorise them to do that? or did they do that on their own? Alos by scaring you with the call the Cops BS/Scam scare tactic. Your vehicle is now disabled as you chose to beleive the threat. PS Telling you that they have to call the cops is a scam. Its a common one and suckers fall for it everytime. You can come in for wiper blades and they can find a "critical" problem with your car. Did you go in for an oil change or a check up? The work may need done. Actually any car with some miles on it could benefit from it. But unless you all of a sudden got really bad mpg and smelled gas all the time. Your problem was elevated to a scare tactic. |
lol actually I DID smell gas quite often but I attributed it to the gas can I had in the trunk as it spilt once and got into the carpet. They didnt take the gas tank off, you could see the gas dripping off the tank just by looking at it. I just called the Orange County Sheriff and theygave me the number for the Attorney General whom I will call tomorrow. |
| Ask for a citation to the law/regulation that requires them to call the cops... or just ask them to show it to you.... Even if you need repairs, I'd find someone who a) didn't threaten to call the police on me for leaving without giving them business b) didn't feed me BS |
