I want to get a digicam, primarily for posting pics on the net and on my desktop. I want something compact with an optical zoom. I have looked at Sonys, Cannons, HPs, and Samsungs. I am not concerned with printing high quality 8x10"s as I have a Pentax SLR with Zeiss lense for that kind of stuff.

What is the range of megapixel's I should be looking at? I want to be able to post clear pics on the net and possibly use for wallpaper on a 12" laptop screen. What is the minimum MP's I should consider? Any specific brands or models?

4Mb minimal, olympus has some nice cams

for what you need, any camera made after 2000 will work.

2 MP min. I have the Canon A60. I would look at the Canon A40 in the EE.

anthing over 2.5 will do

3 to 4 is better.

MegaPix or Megabit same idea
I so go for a 4 MegaPixel camera, I sold a nice olympus a while ago and it was 3.1 MP it took decent photos but when you blew it up to 8X10 you started to see the limitations

If you dont' buy a canon, I don't want to hear it.   Ok, I am bias, there are other good ones.  Megapixels are cheap, get a 4-5 or so.  It seems like above 6 is the price change.

your saying each pixel is represented by one bit?

I have been looking mainly at cams in the 3-4MP range. 4 seems to cost twice as much as 3 and 5 seems to cost twice as much as 4. I don't want to spend the $$$ for 5, so is there that much difference between 3.2 and 4 for twice as much money?

Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus are all good brands, You want optical zoom not count not digital zoom. Glass lenses are preferable.

I also would recommend something in the 3mp range, the typical pic at 640x480 is just a little over 3mp - for posting on the web you really don't even need that but for looking at them on your 'puter I'd say 3mp min.

kilo=1,000
mega=1,000,000
1 pixel =1 bit so 4.0 MP= 4,000,000 bits or 4MB

Only in B/W. Unless I'm mistaken, usually a good digicam is at least 32bit color.

I will say this, for the purposes of this site I will give you that one for a file size reference, but in the real world, image compression and video compression are not that simple, not at all.

Just go to DPreview.com and see what they think about it.
I use a Sony 707 digital and Canon EOS digital rebel and they both take fantastic 8X10 photos

NO, Those are the WORST cameras I have ever used.

1 pixel =1 bit so 4.0 MP= 4,000,000 bits or 4MB

Not really....

For a video card or monitor, color depth is the number of shades that can be generated or displayed per pixel. For lower levels of color depth, the figure is usually given in maximum numbers of possible colors (e.g., 16 colors or 256 colors), whereas the higher color depths are usually listed as how many bits a pixel's color takes up (e.g., 16-bit, 24-bit, 32-bit). Thus 32-bit color is a video card setting where every individual pixel's color is described using 32 bits of information. This is one possible color depth setting on many video cards.

Check out Amazon.com and Newegg.com .  For what you are going to use it for, a 3 MP will be fine in that price range.

That is a good deal, but I am paranoid as hell about buying used electronics on the net. You never know if that thing has been in someone's pool.

3 is plenty.  Get one with a powerful flash, and get one with  less shutter lag. Those are the 2 most annoying things on low end digicams.  Best case, try them out at a store, worst case buy somewhere you can return.  You have a great selection for around $200

Well, I terrabile at spelinng, but Cannon has only one N n it.

A Canon Powershot A95 or A85 would be great.

A95 - 5 megapixel
A85 - 4 megapixel
