Your problem is that you have ME.

Installing Windows 2K or XP should solve your problem.

ME is a nightmare to deal with once the install starts giving you problems.

My advice to you is to back up whatever you don't want to lose, scrub your hard drive, and do a clean installation of XP Pro. ME is just shit. Hope this helps.

You have a virus.
It's called the WinME virus, and the only cure is FDISK.

As soon as I get back from Kosovo, my old machine, running WinMe, is going to be the guest of honor at a MODCC shoot, a' la "Office Space", except with much more gunfire.

Unless he wants to network it.  God I hated bringing my old 98SE box to LAN parties when all my friends had 2000 boxes.  They just plugged in and were ready to go.  (we kept security on the network pretty light on LAN days and my buddy's hardware firewall usually kept the bad guys out anyway).  I one the other hand had to manually configure tons of crap just to connect for a stupid game of Counter Strike.

I think that if the laptop can handle ME it should do alright with 2k.  I ran it just fine on an old Pentium 100 with 128megs of SDRAM.

If you do try to upgrade from ME (Win9x) OS to something newer like 2000 or XP make sure your systems BIOS supports the REQUIRED ACPI functions.  Check your manufacturers website.

I tried doing an upgrade on a Compaq Persario notebook running 98se and it wouldn't install 2000 or XP for this exact reason.  Unfortunately, like in my case, the manufacturer doesn't even support a newer bios upgrade to support the more recent OSs.  So I "upgraded" it to ME and called it good.

I hate to tell you this because I once had ME too...and the only cure is to get rid of it.

I'm running ME on my PC. It's what inspired me to get a Mac.

I was absolutely amazed that the same company that could put out such complete and utter crap (WinME) could also put out WinXP, which is fantastic.

Friends don't let friends run WinME.

I appreciate everyone "BASHING" Windows ME, but the problem is that I need to get it running to get data off of it, I also have software that only will run on ME. Thanks for the help, those who tried.
