What do you folks think of them? I picked up a copy of Richard Marcinko's Seal Force Alpha for $5 at a discount book store yesterday. Read by Demo Dick himself it was quite entertaining. For some reason his voice didn't quite match what I thought it would sound like. His presentation was kind of dry in a G. Gordon Liddy way, reading instead of telling the story. It was a good thing I had read the book though, it did kind of skip around a bit. Not a bad two hours of entertainment for 5 bucks.

Any recommendations for other books? Louis L'more maybe? Know of anything read by Sam Elliot, Mel Gibson or Tom Selleck?  Just like the sound of their voice if nothing else.

Please don't turn this into a bash Marcinko thread. ARFCOM seems to either love him or hate him so lets leave that to another thread.

If you are interested in audio books I suggest you give Audible.com a look. They have a very wide selection of abridged, unabridged downloadable books, and subscription content by various readers.

The Audible.com books can be downloaded to most audio players (IPod, Rio, Pocket PC, ect) or to your computer for listening or burning to audio CD.

I listen to audio books frequently when traveling it is a good way to past the time.

I tried Audio books last year.  I couldn't get into it.  I really prefer actually reading the books.  I get too distracted if I'm not actually reading.  I wish I liked them, cause I could take down so many more books with the hour a day I spend in the car.

When my workday commute was 70 miles one way I checked out a few of them from the library. If you get a good one you actually look forward to your commute to find out what is going to happen next.

I listen to books on tape/audio books every day on my commute back and forth to work. It is the only thing that keeps me sane.

Here's a couple clues..

1. Use your local library. I have library cards in the city I live in and the city I work in which are 35 miles apart.  Most libraries have lots of books on tape or on CDs.

2. Think Ebay, Used books on tape can be had pretty cheap. I just bought 5 books on tape off ebay for $9 plus $5 shipping. I will listen to them and then resell them for the same amount on ebay.

3. If you like cheesy WWII fiction, think of the 4 or 5 series by W.E.B Griffin.  Good entertainment.

4. If you like cheesy action adventure stuff, think Clive Cussler and his Dirk Pit novels. Not great literature but good entertainment.

5. If you can find it, listen to Ronald Reagan's autobiography 'An American Life'.  It is read by Reagan himself . He is an excellent speaker.

6. Try to avoid books read by the author unless the authors are trained actors or speakers.

7. If you do buy new books on CD or tape, consider donating them to your library. You can get a tax deduction and can listen to them whenever you want without having to store them.  I just did this with the DaVinci code.  I bought the book on CD at Costco and after everyone in my family and extended family listened to it I donated it to the library.

8. A lot of old radio shows (The Shadow, Crime Busters, Amos and Andy, Fibber Magee and Molly, X-Minus One, etc) are available online. You can down load them and then burn them to CD. If you don't know what those shows are you really need to listen to them. They are great entertainment.
