| How fast can they climb up a tree? |
|
Fast as any other squirrel. I've only ever seen them a couple times although they're common here. They are mostly nocturnal, which is probably why they are seldomly seen. ________________________________________________________________ My pistol and rifle are TOOLS, I'M the weapon

| Well I was hunting today, got in the stand(8x12 platform) at 0430 est. Plan was to lay down next to a sterno can until it got light. Well I kept on hearing something running around but didn't see anything. I have a few rounds of bird shot in my bag, but don't want to reach for it so I get up, grap my shotty and sit down in a chair. I lean the barrel of my gun on a limb and have the stock in my lap. A little later a see what looks like a fast moving horizontal leaf. Then a few secounds later a hear something running up the tree. It looks like a bat and ran across the limb onto the barrel of my gun and onto my lap. A knock it off and am about to blast it, but don't want to ruin my hunt. So I let it go, but they keep coming. Its freaking me out because I still think they are bats. Then I catch a good look at a tail in the moon light. And I know bats don'y have tails. I didn't think of it being a flying squirrel because I didn't know they were nocternal. But between the "bats" 25 degree weather and not being able to take a safe shot(thats another story). I end up coming out of the stand shorty after day break... I'm going to try t get a picture of them tomorrow and gonna blast a few in 2 weeks. |
| Those suckers are faster than greased lightning. We had some chewing a bird feeder up at night(hung them up as bear trashed our others). So I went out one night with a flashlight and there were 15-20 in the tree. Damn were they fast. And they fly ALOT better than most people think. Those things were cruisin' I'll tell ya. |
ARFCOM isn't any different, you still have to sort out the BS, rumors and old wives tales. |
So, most of the BS here is funny.

the 4 has a strike through it, you just can't see it very good. (I'm 13, not 14) |
Ah! I see the confusion. I was referring to a real life experience. Many years ago in scouts we found a nest of flying squirrels in our cabin. We captured one and took it outside for better viewing. We all made a ring and released the rodent in the center. Sumbitch ran straight over and climbed up my brothers pant leg before he could blink. Pretty humorous for the rest of us, but my brother was not amused... |
| I hate those little bastards. Last year they found their way into the attic and I spent all winter listening to them screw and fight all night long. I tried smoking them out which didn't work and don't think you'll crawl up in the attic and just run them out. That’s asking for it. They have some kind of hive intelligence thing going on. This year I thought I'd fixed their way in till I found one caught in a mousetrap in the kitchen, he was fast enough that it only had him by a toe and some fur. It still slowed him down enough for me to scoop him up in a trash can and cover the top. Now I wanted to squish him but my 4 yr old was jumping up and down screaming "Can we keep him?” So I took it down the road turned it loose. Yeah I know makes you want to cry. It makes me want to cry because evidently the little son of a bitch had some babies or an invalid grandma stashed away in the attic and now the house smells like death. Should have squished that little bastard. |
FOX have AIMLESS go to the pit, If he dare's. AIMLESS, Is one who is a boss to no one in real life. He does as told, an underdog in life. And if you dare AIMLESS I'll be @ the pit waiting. "Please notify Aimless if I make smart remarks in your Equipment Exchange Ads so he can lock my account" AIMLESS go to the pit. |
| Caught one in my house last year. First one I had seen in about 30 years. I will say one thing, catching that little bugger was probably as much family fun we have had in some time. It was really a comedy scene trying to corner that guy in our living room. I have a real good picture of him being held by my daughter and has an expression on his face just like the old Mr. Bill on SNL. I just don't know how to post pictures here. |
To know what they were go back to your stand in the day light, And check. I'll bet you got bat's. And if you got bat's get away quick. Also bat shi$ is full of diseases. Flying squirrels live in small packs, In more than 1 tree. N.C. has them, But they are very rare. DON'T SHOOT A FLYING SQUIRREL...... |

. caught alot more mice the squirells in the traps 4 feet up trunks...
