Got a question for you all.

If I buy a gift card for someone, can they be redeemed for cash?

Here's the story.

I have two nephews that I always give cash to for Christmas.  (not just me, most of the family).  It has come to light that  after the day is done my cheap assed brother (and his wife) makes them hand over the cash they get as gifts for their "college" fund.  Shit like this is one of the reasons that I only see my brother on the holidays.  They are both teens now, BTW, and this has been going on for many years, it seems.

Anyway, I'd just like to make sure that they can actually enjoy their gifts this year without the prick trying to cash out the cards.

Store policy, but as a general rule, no.

That said, if the cards you buy would be useful to the prick and/or his wife, they can always buy them off the kids and put the proceeds in the college fund, and use the cards themselves.

I work for a major retailer and I can tell you our systems do not allow it and it states it on the back of the card, you can't even use it to pay off your credit card either......Most that I have seen from other retailers are the same......sorry.....

Yep, generally no cashola... Never seen a store that would, they want, and got, your money with those cards.

I don't understand the whole gift card thing.  What is my incentive for buying a store specific card?  Why limit the reciever to a selection as limited as what one store will carry?  Store gift cards should be sold at a discount to encourage people to buy them.  I just give cash if I don't know what else to give.  Cash is universal.  IMHO

Why don't you just ask the boys what they want and buy them a gift?

Read my post.  My asshole brother takes all the money we give them as gifts.

I'm an old fart and kind of out of the loop (so to speak) when it comes to buying two teenage boys gifts.

I'd much rather give them some cash and let them buy what they really want with it, but see above.

Maybe hookers and blow when they turn 18.

An option, but kind of hard to keep things equal and reasonable that way.

I hope you didn't think I was commenting on your lack of ability to choose a gift for such a fickle beast as a young man.  I was just wondering why stores think it's a good idea to buy their gift cards.

No problem there. I may just call them and ask what they want instead of the XX$ they usually get.

I  give cash because I remember all the gifts I got from aunts and uncles when I was young.

I may do the prepaid CC things too. At least they could spend them anywhere.

I'd suggest just buying them gifts.  It shows you put some thought into it instead of taking the easy way out.  However, I'd buy them Best Buy cards if you go that route.  Teens always have a use for them there  whether its for DVD's, stereo stuff, games or computer stuff.

Give them the money and dont tell their father.  Or take the boys out shopping and give them a limit and let them chose what they want.

My kids are teens. They really like the gift cards.

In your case, try to get cardsf rom places your brother and his wife aren't likely to to shop. Try the kids favorite music store or clothing store.  For music and clothes, most teens shop at places that do not interest parents. Try to avoid big chain stores like Best buy and Circuit City. Otherwise, you'll end up buying you brother or his wife a new palm pilot.

Won't the parents just take them?

Just get them something small (a cheap shirt) for when they open them in front of the family. Then sneek them cash when the parents are not looking.
