Can only comment on XM. I got it and I think it's worth it. It's practically all I listen to

I just got a Sirus receiver and auto kit today.  It was free so I think that puts Sirius ahead so far.  I just had to sign up for a one year subscription for $140.  I will probably install it tommorrow so then I'll have a better idea.

I like both. And I know for a fact that both work fine as far south as elize, in Northern Central America.

The programmimg is basically the same. Sirius cost about four dollars a month more than XM, however their contract is much easier to get out of than XM. XM's fine print SUCKS.

XM's primary investors are GM (Delphi), Directv, American Honda and a few others.

Sirius's clan is Ford ,Volvo, Mazda, Jaguar, Aston Martin, Infinity, BMW, Audi, Jeep, Land Rover, Mercedes, Hertz. Also, House of Blues, Radio City Music Hall and ISC Motorsports.

Sirius also has more brand name receivers to choose from.

I guess it depends who you want to end up getting your money.

I have XM, but am switching to Sirius.

I have Sirius on my TV and find that I like the music channels much better than XM.

Either way, it's worth the hell outts the money.

I have XM, and so far I like it I guess.

I travel every day to work, and there is bad reception most of the way.  It DOES reach to Hermosillo and San Carlos Mexico, which makes dive trips nicer.

'Course, Howard Stern is moving to Sirius, so who knows?

Their technology seems to be far behind, take a look at their "portable" unit versus XM's MyFi, no comparison.

And from what I've heard they just haven't been doing very well.

No solid evidence , just assumptions that I've over and over.

I think on the MYFI unit.  it stores 5 hours of data so you can listen to it inside.  I don't think it will "receive" indoors.MYFI

As for technology on the Sirius side.  I have been told by a dealer that Sirius is going to be steaming Video, with the current antenna.  So I think that are putting allot of money and time in getting it ready.

I have a feeling that Sirius will over take XM sometime in the next year.

Singing on with Dish Network and Howard Stern was marking genius!

Maybe, who knows.  The way Howard is going he will not have many listners going with him.  I was a die hard fan for 15 years, but I stopped listening to him cause I got sick of the constant pissing and moaning, and I am not alone.

BTW, the MyFi works indoors pretty well, and it works just like a normal radio when you are in an area that has terrestrial repeaters, which are become commonplace.

True Stern is getting pretty bad!

MYFI does sound cool then...

I love the NRA news radio on Sirius.  Its pretty cool to listen to a talk radio show that deals with the gun subject along with other issues.  Much better than Rush in my eyes.

OK....somebody educate me on these.  Do these receivers work with the existing radio in my truck or do they replace what I have?  I like alternative rock and there is nothing in my area.  I would like to be able to listen to what I want wherever I am.  What all will I need to buy and what can I expect to pay?

You get a plug and play unit. it plugs into the cig lighter and broadcasts through the FM frequency.  It works pretty dang good.

People do, tho.

I got XM a long time ago, but since O&A came on the air it has been the ONLY thing I have listened to in the car.  They have their own channel so their show repeats all day.  It works out perfectly so I hear a different part of the show everytime I am in the car.

It REALLY makes driving better IMO, definitely worth the money.

Sirius was on the downward path for a few years... I used to have a CD head that had it built in, but I went with XM because my friend had an extra receiver, and I was driving a lot. I dropped out of it, and my brother just got Sirius. Any news of them failing is old news, they were doing rather poorly, but with a lot of confidence and backing, they're back like K-Mart. XM needed some competition anyway.

Or would you have to have two different receivers, antennas etc....

You can replace the radio with something that is XM or Sirius compatible, however, the easier way to do it is to buy the reciever/antenna/FM modulator. You hook your radio antenna into it and then back into your stereo head. Then you set the radio to a certain station, (usually a very low one) and it broadcasts straight to your receiver when you go to that station.

ARFireer,

As I understand it, XM will not allow you to transfer your contract to purchase a new or better unit.

Example:

You buy a lower cost XM radio for say $99, and sign a two year contract for programming. After one year you want a better unit, say a $350 Blaupunkt. XM will not allow you to transfer your present contract to cover the new unit, even if you purchase it from them. You must buy another contract for the Blaupunkt, and continue to pay out the length of the original contract !

The fine print goes on to say that if your XM receiver is sold or traded in with your vehicle, you are still obligated to continue paying until the contract runs out. The only way out is if the unit is stolen.

I got that far on their website, cilcked it off and purchased the Sirius.

11/25/2004 8:32:35 AM EDT
[#31]
When I signed up for it I did not sign a contract, I was given the offer of paying a year or two upfront at a lower price, but it clearly said I was not bound by any contract and I can cancel at any time and receive a prorated refund.
EDIT:  I think you read something wrong, because it is still the same way:

"No Obligation
Cancel any time and receive a prorated refund of the balance of your remaining subscription"

www.xmradio.com/service_subscription/service_subscription.jsp

So on the same note, you can cancel the subscription on one unit and start a new one on another, if you ever buy another and want to transfer.  But I don't think you would have to go that far anyway, when my Roady had to be replaced I called up XM and they transfered my account to the new unit without a problem.

It's too bad that you missed out on a good thing over a mistake.

Hey, no need for the attitude bro.  The way you made it sound was that you were ready to buy XM until you (mis)read the deal, which was the reason you went to Sirius.

well, read the news on Sirius.  Buying Sirius stock now would be like buying AOL, Yahoo, Amazon, or any of those others when they first came out, and XM is like CompuServe.  Remember when Compuserve was all the rage?  Sirius will be topping XM by 2006 and even then, this market will still be in it's infancy.  BEACHFRONT PROPERTY!

XM!!!!!

Can't live without it.  We get a discount because we have more than one reciever.  Makes it it $17 a month for two systems.  PLus we get a discount for paying six or twelve montha at a time, if we want.

Early this coming year, XM should have out a new "Adaptor" for their Roady 2 reciever that allows you to have a fully functioning XM walkman.  The earphones will have the antenna in them.

That will kick serious arse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

XM has everything I want/need.  Great music, FOXNews, Laura Ingraham, Glenn Beck, Michael Medved, Dave Ramsey, comedy stations, etc......

If you look around XM forums you'll see a way to do it yourself.  They were adding battery packs and mounting that tiny antenna to the back of the Roady unit, making a decent sized Walkman.  I believe they were also doing it with the orginal Roady.  I'm not too sure on the details, but if you're interested it shouldn't be too hard to find.
