I have looked into a Garmin Quest as it can be both a vehicle moving map/directions unit AND a portable 'pocket' camping or in the boonies unit. I would like to have both capabilities if possible. Any user info or additonal reccomendations I should have? BTW, price needs top be in the $500-600 range.

GPS is one of my hobbys, I've spent a lot of money by buying GPS's, then selling them later for the newest model.

I have used the Quest and it is a great little unit, you will be happy.

But for me, I really love this: http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsmap60cs/

It feels more rugged than the Quest, I use this on my Quad, Waverunner, boat, car, and walking.  It's a solid unit.  The features are pretty much the same as the Quest, the screen is the same size but in a different direction.  I like the verticle screen of the GPSMAP  because that is where you want to see more- in front of you.  The Quest's horizontal screen shows more to the sides.
I also like the way the GPSMAP uses 2 AA batteries, they last a long time even with the light on, and they are easily replaceable.  I buy a 32 pack of Duracell from Costco for $11.  With the Quest you have to recharge it, which might turn into a big problem, it's also just one more thing to plug in and deal with.

If you like the Quest, go for it!  Great unit.

Look on eBay, they sell brand new for much cheaper than retail stores.  I'm pretty familiar with most Garmin units if you need help.

Stay away from Magellan if you don't like the French.

My Magellan Meridian is a nice unit.  Lots of features.  But it's a battery hog.

I'd go with someting different now, something designed more recently.
