| What were your experiences updating with SP2? Any disasters? I've just downloaded it, set a restore point and am about to take the plunge. |
|
There were a lot of reported issues that potentially impacted me. After studying, researching and preparing for workarounds/rollbacks. I finally installed it. I haven't had a single problem on my system (laptop) or any of the other 6 systems (3 laptops, 3 desktops) I had to install it on. That was 45 days ago. YMMV. LMK, if you have any problems; I may be able to help. |

Depend's on what you are doing, it can be good or a total nightmare It breaks a number of applications right of the box. Check http://support.microsoft.com/kb/842242 http://support.microsoft.com/windowsxpsp2 Can not install it on the computers i support, do to number of issues with Software that no home user will ever be running. It improves security but M$ still has a long way to go as does Linux distributions |
I recently upgraded to SP2 (again). The first install was a fatal disaster, since my PC basically didn't want to surf the web anymore and booting up was a slow process. I reinstalled Windows, and put on SP1. That ran fine for awhile until that damn .jpg problem kept me from looking at any .jpgs at all, so I did the upgrade again. It ran like shit for the first day then it suddenly ran fine for some reason . Don't install it unless you are ready for a possible reformat.

Same thing happened to me. I have a Linksys Wireless-G PCMCIA card in my laptop and could not access the secured wireless network we have set up after I installed SP2. I played with it for a while and reloaded the software, and finally just went back to the restore point I had established just before the install. Oh well, I tried. |

I only had problems with my Yahoo DSL. Especially replying to email. It wouldn't let me at all. Tried all kinds of online fixes and nothing works. I unistalled it and haven't had anymore problems. I run two adware/spyware programs in the background and Norton with live update for the viruses. I'll try again if I have to. PS Its the wife's computer. Mine is a .Mac/never a problem |
this is a known problem and not just with SP2. Search google for the wireless zero config service. In a nutshell, you need to make a small cmd or batch file that stops the wireless zero config service when you are on the wireless connection. This keeps it from dropping your current connection and searching for better ones. If you need to move to a new access point or rejoin your current one, you just restart the service. There's directions online. |
| Crashed mine - Lost my boot sector on the first attempt and had to format my HD. I found out that you have to let XP Pro download it as an automatic update for it to work on my PC. (I mistakenly went to the MS website and downloaded it manually.) Second install as an automatic update worked. I then had MS mail me a SP-2 CD (free!) so if I have to reinstall in the future I can do it easier |

I've done scores of systems...most work out just fine. A few had issues with "breakage" as Microsoft puts it. The failure rate appears to be above normal..enough for cover stories on industry magazines to have titles like, "Users put on defensive by SP2" and "SP2: Fixing the fix." The basic idea is a big step in the right direction, but we have the typical teething to with which to deal. In the work environment on the tech support side I'm finding that there is a large misunderstanding of what SP2 does. For example, a users may go with some security-sliding-bar-doodad on SP2 that turns off javascript, and then their favorite site doesn't run javascript. Imagine that. |

. Don't install it unless you are ready for a possible reformat.
