Well as many of you know, i am attending Montana Tech, persuing my Petroleum Engineering degree.

In one of my Petroleum courses, we have about 5 saudi's.

They speak very little english, and what they do speak is very broken.

Anyways, we are doing class presentations using Microsoft Power point.

The second Saudi to go, had a presentation that had to last at least a minute

he was talking about rotary systems on drilling rigs, which comprise of 4 main parts.

he had like 3 slides, each of which tried to explain the parts of the rotary system.

HE NAMED ALL FOUR PARTS OF THE SYSTEM,

and then it was time for the questions.

the professor asks this exact question:

What are the 4 main parts of the rotary system?

His answer:  I don't know.

I couldn't help but laugh.

the crappy part of this whole deal is that he will probably get an A.

pisses me off.

That reminds me of the Professors in Clemson’s Industrial Engineering department. I went for a tour and most of the professors where Indians who could barely speak engish, I could hardly even understand the presentation. I guess that’s why I am in graphics now.

Reminds me of an Indian guy (not sure if US citizen, but he would have to be to contract) in my ROTC class...can't speak English worth a damn and when you ask him a question it's "I don't know" <---because he didn't understand you...  the guy isn't dumb, and actually is a grad student and owns the tests in that class...but, can't hear/understand spoken English worth a damn.

Thats the thing. Why the hell are you in an english speaking college, when you can't speak the damn language.

Actually they are probably very fluent in English.  You can't get a graduate degree in India without being fluent in English and if you gave them a written TOEFL test they'd score high on it.  They simply speak a different type of English and with a very different accent.  You can see the same thing in the British Isles, although it's less of a problem than it used to be because they get lots of American TV (India doesn't get much American TV).
