Pan Am Flight Academy is still around... though I don't know if it's actually an affiliation with the airline... I'm sure one of the other resident pilots could answer that...

Even more impressive is the factory where they are built. You honestly can't appreciate the scale of a 747 until you've been up close and personal with one. They are just freaking huge. You wonder how the damn things ever get off the ground.

I wanna post pics too. Why can't I just drop and drag? Why does this have to be difficult? DrF is a show off

Q.  What is the difference between a blond and a 747?

A.  Not everyone has been in a 747.

Q.  What is the same between a blond and a 747?

A.  Both have black boxes.

does anyone think the double decker AIRBUS is going to be a financial loser or give the 747 some competition?

Anything that will give EU a kick to the scrotum I am in favor for. Although, Something THAT big has to go through a rigorous marketing and planning strategy. Cant see them overestimating here.

For a VERY short while. That L1011 is actually a little shorter than a normal one. Pan Am also had the first 747SP and they acquired some DC10's when they took over National Airlines.

Neat story (no I didn't fly one):

My wife and I were in Hawaii, and we had stayed far too long.  We were homesick (yes, in Hawaii.  Weird, right?)  so we changed our plane tickets to go back a day early.  We ended up flying into LA at some ungodly hour.  We changed planes, and took a redeye from LA to (Denver?) or something.  It was on a 747, we were in First Class, and we were two of like 10 people on that plane (including the flight crew!)  It was 1am or so, and it was just amazing.  By far, it was THE best flight I have ever taken, and doubt I'll ever top it.  Just, wow.

Same here... I remember I was pissed because the two fuselage halves would not stay and I got a shit load of glue on the seams... ugh what a mess.

Cool story though. I ahve a customer that everytime I go to fix his dishwasher he GIVES me a static model of a commercial airliner. We are talking those big ass metal ones. He is a pilot and really cool. He collects them. Everytime he gets a new one, he has to push an old one off the shelf and he gives it away.

Last time he gave me an ALL ALUMINUM American Airlines 707 (So heavy you can sink a ship with it) and the time before that he gave me a 747-400 1000th model of the "Megatop" Singapore Airlines. VERY COOL!!!

I worked at Boeing's Everett facility for a while in the late 80s/early 90s. Came to appreciate Boeing's line of commercial aircraft, especially the 747.

Correct.  The VC-25 is a 747-200.  Allthough the -400 was available at the time of delivery, they picked the -200 for the simple fact of less solid state electronics to be knocked out by an EMP blast.

My brother just left Boeing in Seattle for another gig through Boeing working on military installations. I personally would rather be on a 747 than an Airbus. I had flown alot of 747's (Pan Am) specifically when we were stationed in Berlin. Last year I had the displeasure of flying in an Airbus. I was flying back home and I couldn't understand why the couple next to me was putting in earplugs for the whole flight, until after we took off. The plane is actually noisier than McDonald Douglas's planes. I have sworn I will never fly airbus ever again. Boeing is the only plane I want to fly on.

I too find Airbus planes ungodly loud.

Nothing flies or lands more smoothly than a 747.

The sweetest flight I've ever been on was on a 747 in business class up in the "dome" behind the flight deck just after 9/11.  I was lucky to get on the the very first United flight into IAD from LAX.  What fantastic service.  Humomgous, soft leather seats that tilt back all the way to sleep like a baby...each with it's own indivitual entertainment system...unfreakingreal chow and the hottest FEMALE flight attendants this side of PSA.  First class is even nicer...not much but a bit.  They were full that flight though.

I fly a lot...and that flight was better than any flight in First Class I've taken in any other aircraft including 757s. 767s, Md-80s, 737s and the Frog Airbuses.

Even my flight to Oz in coach on a 747SP was very comfortable.  Amazing plane.

Actually PanAm still exists in a small form.  There is a Miami based charter service running under the name PanAm, and they still have the same classic logo.

Now since we're talking not just 747's any more (sorry for the hijack), here's the plane that I first professionally cut my teeth on as a JEEP mechanic.

I WILL PIC one of those someday.  Hopefully soon.  I would choose it over a 747, even if the price were the same.

There is a place in either Colorado or Texas, where any Private Pilot can get type rated on a 737 and fly one for I think 30 minutes.  It costs around $10,000.  I think the article was on Avweb a few years ago.

When I was a kid I used to think the B-52s were big, but when one was parked next to a 747 on the flight line at Paine Field (the airport Boeing's Everett factory is adjacent to), the B-52 looked absolutely puny.

The company I work for does the maintenace on the NASA 747, and we use some of Pam Am's old 747's for Cargo. And if your ever driving down I-10 between Phx. and Tucson, and notice a bunch of Aircraft tails off in the desert that's where I work.
Before that i worked on 747's for NWA.  Nice but damm big especially if you have to go up on the tail and change the fairing on top of the vert. Stab.

I flew 747's for a few years. I'm on the DC10 now. It is a fun big old jet to fly. FWIW, Pan Am academy uses NWA simulators in Eagan MN. That's where they caught that terrorist POS Massoui  (sp??). If you go there to fly the 747 sim don't tell them you just want to learn how to fly... you don't care about taking off or landing.
