My dad is a Vietnam-era Marine and he's very critical of the boot camp portion of the film. The yelling and screaming and hollering and insults are 100% true he told me. He saw drill instructors put hands on recruits but never outright strike one across the face like Hartman did. The biggest thing he called bullshit on is Pyle getting live ammo to the barracks. Coming off the range he said every round was accounted for before they left the range for this reason. |

My father got drafted and served in Vietnam in the army. He told me stories about boot camp that scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. One story was about a Pyle-like recruit in boot camp that wasn't cutting it. A DI came up behind him during a march or run or something and kicked him in the ass for loafing. The recruit obviously fell down, so the DI kicked him a few more times to motivate him to get back up. It didn't work. Both the DI and the recruit disappeared shortly thereafter. Another time, some recruits picked up a DI's Beetle and put it sideways between some other vehicles. The whole platoon was summoned to an auditorium where the DIs said they were going to stay there until someone confessed. They were there for hours when a few guys admitted to it (my dad wasn't convinced they were the actual culprits, they just wanted to end it) and were taken behind the stage. Everybody in the auditorium could hear the DIs kicking the shit out of those guys and one of them somehow got away and came running back to where the platoon was sitting. The DIs caught up to him and dragged him back behind the stage again. I always wanted to join the army and serve like my father did, but stories like that made me rethink my priorities.

My dad was in the Army before Vietnam and told me about a DI who laid hands on a recruit and promptly got his ass handed to him.......both also disappeared He also told me about a field exercise where a truck pulled up and the DI told everyone to get on the truck but told my father and another they were running back with him......the other guy started to get tired and fhe DI grabbed the guy and picked him up and drug him back with my father running with them......my dad told me he was one DI that everyone was in awe of |

I don't know why anybody like this movie. It was a blatant anti-war, anti military piece of Leftist shit. Most of the movie was ridiculing the military and the Marine Corps. Typical post Vietnam Leftist hate fest. R Lee Ermey was entertaining but even that got old after awhile. |

Joker also failed as Pyle's squad leader by not reporting his deteriorating mental condition to their DI. He might have saved a couple of lives by doing that. My dad was a Marine went through Parris Island in '62. He told me after watching FMJ that it was just like that and he had been slapped like Joker 2 times. There were other crazy stories. I think dad always wanted me to be a Marine but after his stories about boot camp there was no way. He was proud to be a Marine though that's for sure. Patrick Attached File |

| I was at PI in ‘77. The DIs didn’t smack you around in front of others. They called you into the office, and waylayed you. Had one screw up recruit escalate his asswhipping up the chain. Later that day, a captain came in to the squad bay, explained they were investigating. Has all of us about face, looking at the portholes. Then said whomever saw it happen, take a step back. Nobody made a move. Captain left. The recruit never came back, and our DIs remained. |

I think what might not be obvious to many people is Pyle with an unloaded M-14 would have easily outclassed Joker with only a baton. Yeah, at the beginning Pyle was a fat tub of lard. But after three months of Boot Camp he would have been leaner and much stronger than before - and he was a pretty big guy. In my Boot Camp platton we had a guy who went from 210 lbs to 165 lbs (he didn't start with us - was dropped from a different plattom to repeat one month of training). And all Marine recruits are trained to use an unloaded rifle - even without a bayonet - as a weapon by itself. They do hours of training learning different ways to strike with it. Both Joker and Pyle would have been well aware of this. A rifle might be a bit slower than a baton but it does have more reach and lot more heft. And a baton would not be able to effectively parry any attack from an M-14. Third, Joker would have been well aware of Pyle's deteriorated mental state and how dangerous he could have been. It's not like they would pass each other briefly in a hallway - they were literally living with other 24/7. He would have known that Pyle could be a dangerous foe if pushed and in that last scene he had obviously been pushed too far. As for sneaking the rounds off the rifle range. During the week of marksmanship training it would have been easy to load one bullet less during rapid fire. During rapid fire you load your own magazines, two with five round each, then shoot a string of ten rounds with one magazine change. The missing round would have been counted as a miss. Stick the bullet in your boot and you would probably get away with it. The problem then is - where do you get the magazine? We only had magazines while on the rifle range - didn't even take them back to the barracks after shooting that day. |

I went though Army Basic in August 1966. Our DIs we all Korean War veterans. Not in my company but in another in the battalion there were early Vietnam veterans. Our First Sergeant was a WWII veteran. They took their jobs to train us for war seriously and it was not uncommon to put hands on us if they didn't think they had our attention. We wore plastic helmet liners during day to day training when not in the field. I fucked up in close quarter drill once and got beat over the head unmercifully with a baton. 60 years later I can still feel the blows. |
