I got a CDL A when I retired. I had two trucking jobs; each one lasted 2.5 years. The workload and responsibilities kept increasing, without a corresponding increase in pay. Also, the hours were pretty messed up, like getting up at 0130 or 0300 for some local runs, and up at 0200 to start some 14 hour days when I was out of state. I gave 3 days notice at one job, and 5 hours notice on the other job. I was 64 years old and doing okay financially, so why keep beating my brains out? Some years ago, a local motorcycle dealer had an open house with food and refreshments. The food was provided by a gentleman with a hot dog cart. The dogs were German-style wieners, and the buns were homemade, still stuck together on the baking tray. The cart had kraut and other good condiments. Regular American hot dogs never measured up after those. Good luck with your future endeavors, OP. |

Even after that, it underpaid a bunch of people- I thought I owed the agency about $400 for OT I was paid thar should have been regular time. They never fixed it for about a year, then claimed I owed them over $1000, which I said show me the proof. Union said fuck them, we are demanding an audit, don’t pay them. Agency actually owed me 14k after the audit! (Biggest discrepancy in employee pay in the whole division). Following that, there was a lawsuit, and they had to pay over a million to everyone forced to use it, in a class action suit. I got a check a year or two after retiring for like $100 or something like that…. When people say public employee unions are bad, well sometimes they are needed. And that is before we mention getting thrown to the wolves over some high profile case or something like that. But hey- at least we never had problems due to daylight savings time adjustments! |

As for the quitting with no notice- there is a certain freedom in being able to stand on your own in the world, not beholden to someone for a paycheck. I found the closer I was to retirement, the less I worried about things. Pay was good, but leadership was headed downhill as good leaders retired and people who should never have been promoted at all kept working their way up the ladder. It is amazing how a few years of poor leadership can change whether people enjoy their job or not. When you treat people as simply a cog in the machine, don’t be surprised if a bunch of good people have enough, and suddenly your machine doesn’t work nearly as well as it once did… |

I walked off my last job no notice too. I got hurt at work and had to have surgery. After recovery, I walk in on my first day back and I don't have any where to do my actual job. I literally got moved to the little bosses desk that was a foot deep in clutter, handed a tablet and an extension phone. Got told to be the switchboard and do phone sales and oh yeah your schedule is changed by 3 hours too. Come in at 10am till 6pm now Yeah no, kiss mine. Second day, I drove into the lot at 9:50 and they removed half the MEN'S employee parking. Yup we had gender parking and men were not allowed to park in the wormens area or by the storefront. So I looped the area a second time and nope, no spots. So drove back home, grabbed coffee and called the little boss and told him I wasn't going to play and I was done. Today I ran into a former coworker. Been there about 15 years. He was highly placed, well liked and productive. He told the big boss/owner, a major dickhead, to FOAD. He finally had enough of the abuse and walked no notice. He's happy as a clam. He told me over half the entire staff has quit in the last few months and at least three more are planning to Asap As for me, Wifes retired, we are basically debt free and had FU money to tie us over until the sweet, sweet .gov retirement check starts to roll in . Been a 18 glorious months of not kissin the man's ass.

Two hours later after the crews had decided to drink their newfound wealth, The regional dick and I walk in and sit down at a table. Wasn't 2 minutes and the nickels started flying across the bar at us.  He decided to let me handle it with phone calls over the weekend to salvage our crew. I got about 95% of the crew back on Monday morning but it wasn't easy.

I seriously don’t get the dichotomy of giving a two week notice as a courtesy at the same time but the company is under no obligation to do the same. Golden rule doesn’t apply to the company I guess. I was laid off at my last job, at my desk writing an email one minute, walked out of the building with a 3rd of the staff the next. They did provide a severance which was decent of them and they didn’t try to make a for cause excuse to not pay unemployment (which my current employer has done a few times when laying people off). Of my grown up jobs I’ve only walked out of one. Super toxic girl boss owner could turn every single interaction into a screaming match. Had probably 20 original employees quit within the first 6 months and a dozen more she hired within the first year. I was still stuck in the boomer/silent generation mentality that hard work and dedication to a job defined your self worth, along with the notion that business owners were doing a service creating jobs, so stuck it out much longer than I should have. Life is too short for the stress that shit causes. It killed any notion that employers/owners give one rats ass about anything but their profits and should be treated accordingly. |

Three weeks ago I did the same, it was a long time coming because of them breaking my balls. I finally had enough and walked out without notice. 13 years for me also and had moved to a different facility about 2 months ago. The people there were the biggest ball breakers. Went to the bosses office and threw my keys on the desk and walked out. I was hoping to make 65, but I guess 63 and 3/4's was the time to retire. In the last 3 weeks all I've been doing is fishing and shooting. I will get used to this sooner or later, but it seems strange not working.
