Dumb things seen on the road. (Page 2 of 3)

I keep seeing chairs on the side of the road. Not like fallen out of trucks and smashed. No, typically simple wooden 4 leg chairs set up in the median or on the side of the highway, like sometimes going to sit there and watch traffic. One was weird. I think I've seen 5 between my town and the town where I work, and that's disconcerting. |

I guess he figured this was an insult or something, because he floored it, passed me at about 20 over, and then matched my speed all the way to my exit. He must have been one of those drivers that just can't handle having anyone pass them. It’s a control thing. Some people feel they have zero control over anything else in their life. Show up at this time, do as your told, go home the empty place you call home because fir some reason they have been unable to find a mate like most other people seem to do with ease. People that do as you described, that’s their one moment to show the world they are in charge. Now they don’t do it in any checkout lines where they have to be face to face with society, but out there where no one knows who they are, they get to feel like they call the shots. King of their own world, if just for a brief moment. |

I get sent collision videos for about 120 signalize intersections. At first I thought it would be a bunch of people trying to beat the yellow light, nope almost none of those. Most are, WTF, where was your mind at. Most claim the other guy ran the red light or was at fault, minor or totaled vehicles. Some are, “hope whatever you were doing other than driving was worth it, you just died” There’s a big push nationally for “vision zero”., mostly pushed by planner types. Kinda pisses me off. I’m an engineer, not a magician or God, I can’t take the wheel or pull people’s heads out of their own asses. Planners, this is how I would like the world to be. Engineers, this is the reality of the world you live in. Attached File |

Where I live now, 2 way stops are pretty rare and know one knows what to do at them. Almost every time I'm turning left and there is someone across from me turning right, they try to wait or motion me to go because I was there first. I just sit there, and sometimes they get extremely mad about it but refuse to take their right of way. Or I'm turning right and the person across thinks they have the right away to turn left because they were there first. If I'm in my shitbox I just make my turn and cut in front of them. |

Car turning off a side street made what should have been an easy right turn. Except he made such a wide turn he ended up in the opposing lane making another driver almost run off the road to avoid a head on collision. I was far 3nough away I wouldn't have been affected by the crash. |

In my AO, bicyclists who ride on a road with lots of limited-sight curves and hills. This same road also has a concrete plant and other industrial facilities, with the resulting heavy truck traffic. I have run off the road twice to avoid being hit by another vehicle or to avoid hitting a bicyclist. Also in my AO, a majority of drivers treat flashing light intersections (malfunctioning normal lights controls) as a 4-way stop. Intersections with flashing yellow for 2 directions and flashing red for the other 2 directions. According to our state Driver's Manual, flashing yellow at an intersection means "proceed with caution", not stop. I have seen many near misses on the flashing yellow lanes, where someone stops in one lane, and someone else goes through in the other, while the perpendicular lane (red flashing lane) thinks everyone will stop and take turns.

People driving in low light that don't know to put their lights on 'Auto'. and Asian women, and black women wearing a shower cap, no seatbelt with a phone glued to their head who do not give one single shit about situational awareness. |

When we drove to Florida, the interstate in rural areas of Georgia had people pulled over on almost every bridge, sitting on the rail and having a picnic. And what's the deal in Georgia and Tennessee with flat tires? I was shocked at the amount of mounted tires just left behind on the highway. Do that many people think a new tire comes mounted on a matching wheel? |

ProTip: Never pick a fight with a tree planter. He swings a hoedad for 9 hours a day, carries 30-40 pounds of seedlings on his back, and has 12-14 friends just like him hiding out on the other side of the junk butt pile. They will fuck your shit up.

Hit the deer. That buck was just as likely to jump in front of you as away. If you hit the deer, you have body damage and an insurance claim. Swerving to miss the deer will put you on your side in the timber at 60mph, into the rocks at 60mph, upside down at 60mph, or hauling ass through an orchard at 60mph in the dark. All of these have happened to my clients. If you hit the deer you are still right side up, on the pavement, and most often still in control of your vehicle. |

Yesterday I got stuck behind 2 folks barely going 50 in a 55, running neck and neck, for a distance of over 2 miles. I also see on a daily occurrence irrational drivers who constantly weave between lanes, violating and following space they can fit into, trying to get ahead of a long line of traffic they're NEVER going to get around. I find it hilarious when they hop in the right lane because it moved faster for a split second, then get stuck behind a big rig. I never give them enough space to get over when I see them, knowing in drives them crazy. I had some guy in a big truck behind me keep backing off, then aggressively speed up to right on my bumper, trying to get me to go faster despite being able to see the huge line of cars in front of me I can't do anything about. And we were already doing 10 over. Route 59 is full of retarded, impatient fuckwads. I can always count on encountering at least 3 of them on the way to work daily. Then some guy in an SUV behind me, I'm doing almost 65 in a 55, and he's ass raping me despite have a perfectly clear lane to go around. Eventually he does, probably doing 70+, gets up about a half mile, then slows down to just under 60. The moment I catch up and start passing him doing 63, he stomps on the gas and hauls ass. I guess he just NEEDS to be in front. |

My favorite thing is driving on I-15 in the Salt Lake City metro area. Much of the road has 5 lanes + a dedicated HOV / tolled express lane. The main takeaways are: - Big rigs drive in every lane, with a bias toward the left lane, even with minimal traffic - Every work truck / contractor truck will make every effort possible to get to and stay in the left lane, and usually go slower than the speed limit. - People will pay extra money to use the express lane, in order to go slower than the unpaid left lane. It boggles the mind. |

All of these stories and having personally experienced most of them, are why I stopped riding a motorcycle on the road about 14 years ago. It's just not worth it anymore. "Donor Cycles" are named that for a reason. I will stick with my dirt bikes and ATV, for off-road Trail action. - People are Idiot's - |
