So I live in a holler with a fitful creek, so a lot of larvae develops. I bought the place last year, and there is a 30x40 shop and 40x70 barn. PO allowed the bats to live in the shop between the insulation board and roof, but I cannot stand the fucking smell of their shit/piss in this thing. I'm going to have to seal the gables/peaks as they are getting in/out both ends of the shop through those gaps, and then likely have a nice black smoke burn pit one dark night  I want to keep the bats, so I need to build a lot of bat boxes. I have a decent pile of 1x8's so likely will use them to build and hang these things on the side of the shop and barn. Should I insulate them for the bats as well to get through winter? What kind of design have ya'll used to great success? |

You are not allowed to remove or exclude Bats from their nests between mid May to August 15th as they are still taking care of baby Bats at that time but you are good to go now. You can buy "Bat Excluders" which are basically one way valves you place on the bats entrance/exits so the Bats can leave but not return home; obviously this would work best after you install a few Bat boxes nearby for them to move into. There are many different styles of Bat Excluders so Google it to find some that work best for your situation. |

The excluder a company I hired used was a piece of stove pipe attached to some hardware cloth that covered a gable vent. The bats could get out of the pipe but couldn't fly back up it. It had to stay in place for 30 days minimum to ensure all the bats had left my attic. |

I'll also be using the airhorn inside the shop around dark for the next few weeks, for..... reasons... |
