Bats are great, provide a service eating bugs, etc. All of that is true - until they get in your house. If you're seeing them all over, it might be a good time to have a preemptive bat exclusion done on the house. We moved to the exurbs a couple years ago and had a couple run-ins with bats that had gotten into the attic and crawled down the walls, eventually coming out in the basement and flying around the house. They're welcome outside, but once they and their close association with rabies gets inside it's a completely different ballgame. In Michigan the young start coming out of the nests in August and they all start searching for their prior nesting grounds to rewinter in October. Since the exclusion on our house, we haven't had any show up again (crosses fingers). |

It was during the months when the young don't leave the roosting area so a permit from the state was required. The ingress started at a gable vent, they would roost between the louvers on the vent and their urine and feces corroded the screen allowing them access to the attic. I haven't seen any signs indicating they have returned but the roof area is sealed up pretty tight now. They installed screens on the outside of all the vents after the excluders were removed. |
