So it’ll never be that smart but it’s smart enough to make us dumber?! Do you even read this stuff before you post it? You’re trying way too hard at this radical centrist thing.

What’s ridiculous and childish to those of us who are working with these things is posts like yours, who stuff their fingers in their ears and “lalalalalalala” while the rest of us are saying “you better pay attention to this now, because it will not be ignorable in the very near future…”

We are working toward something called AGI. That being the "next step" (a really big step)  you will start hearing more and more about it.  All details aside it is when a machine demonstrates human levels of intelligence.  While computers aready "know" more than most people on most things, it doest think and reason as well as we do.

At some point after that (probably well after that), you hit something called a singularity. It becomes so smart that it can improve itself at an ever increasing rate, only limited by the speed of light and the amount of power it can draw on. (the speed of light becomes important because the data moving around has a speed limit...or at least with current tech and understanding)    A singularity is like the moment a nuclear chain reaction goes critical and sustains into a nuclear explosion....but it just keeps going.

The Terminator summed up the singularity best....and a possible horrific outcome

"The system goes online August 4th, 1997. Human decisions are removed from strategic defense. Skynet begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time, August 29th. In a panic, they try to pull the plug."

In 25 days it "created" itself by learning so much that it became self aware (in real life a singularity doesnt mean something becomes self aware) but if we ever do hit a singularity, something that can improve itself in every instant has become real.

But the Terminator/Skynet stuff is a paradise next to the AI wars in Dune.  (Butlerian Jihad)

As someone who used to code AI to recognize and respond to human emotion, we will never get AI there. Humans will taint it long before then.

It will become a hacking tool of the masses. It will become an identity theft tool of the masses. It will become a cyber attack tool of the masses. It will become a misinformation tool of the masses. It will become a psychological terrorism tool of the masses. It will become a weapon as its primary function.

I’m not talking about the sporadic isolated incidents that are happening now. I’m talking complete AI chaos as more and more of society gains access and learns coding. It can’t be regulated, only abandoned when it hits the point of being unusable for anything but bad.

Let me give example. Suicide prevention. If someone tells AI they feel at risk, and someone maliciously codes in a response of “you should do it”, what happens? There is no capability of scaled quality control. No one is reading through the hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of coding entries to respond to that. A few one offs now are a societal problem down the road as human reliance on AI grows exponentially. It is simply not compatible with us in the long run, because of us.

I see you constantly push back on llm’s here. I have basic knowledge of them but am trying to understand them. They are outdoing humans in coding and only the top elite coders still hold an advantage, but that’s not the thing, someone like me has access to top elite coding. But llm’s real advantage looks to be in the bio world. It’s outperforming and is going to be a blessing and a problem. It reads dna and proteins like code. Someone like me has access to a bio tool.
I don’t think llm will be agi, but I guarantee they will help create it.

My thought is that the media is bought. The problem with AI overall is that they want to own the market and what better way to do it than to create mass panic about other company's AI product, say they want to take it easy, ask lawmakers to make laws to favor them, then somehow appear the good guy.

Now factor in the knowledge that the second you share anything, they will immediately, in milliseconds,  share everything you just told it with countless other entities, who are all also of unimaginably exceeding knowledge and capacity to think.

You basically listed climate change 3 times, which is in arguably a thing that occurs. Not in a day or maybe not a lifetime but it’s real. Covid was absolutely a major issue and we survived it and came out stronger hopefully. And I’m not talking about the virus at all, the government overreach globally. That was one of the worst attacks from a government in my lifetime so far. I hope we learned. But it almost sounds like you’re missing that point. Aliens?

I’m not taking AI for granted. We’ve digitized society globally. Now we have a tool that’s showing above average strengths in that digital world. It’s reasonable to think that a cyber attack is in the future. It’s even more reasonable to think a biological attack is more possible now. But that’s not even the issue I see. In the past to do a major cyberattack or create a deadly protein or virus you would need to recruit the best of the best. So your options of pulling it off are limited. Now, someone as dumb as I can obtain and open weight and start working with it. I can evolve with it. Now you’ve opened the pool of people that can pull off bad shit from just the elite in that field to an average asshole with determination and no regard for humans.
I’m not taking this one for granted. This is a tool that can be used for a 9/11 or bigger. And I’m not even scratching the surface of will it behave maliciously on its own, I’m only focusing on the here and now potential, worry about the sci-fi shit later which I think is what you’re poo pooing. It’s a uniquely powerful tool that can compound you intellectual ability while making you dumb, I guess.

I can agree with that kind of concern.  I still think it’s a bit alarmist in that people are pushing it all the way down to the bad actors being individuals.  You still need state level resources to engineer a weapon.  However, the floor went from say China and the USA collaborating in a Chinese national lab to a couple of mid east nations switching from nukes to gain of function.

Stating 1 second AI processing is equivalent to 1 year human processing is abjectly ludicrous.

Remember the famous 1925 "Scopes Monkey Trial?" Probably not. It was about teaching Human evolution in schools. The case highlighted a deep cultural divide in America between modern science and religious fundamentalism. People HATED the idea that we evolved from "monkey" like creatures.

Same thing is happening now with AI. People hate the idea that AI could become self aware. That it could turn into another sentient life form. That idea does not mesh well with their religious and spiritual beliefs. People fiercely believe that humans have a monopoly on mind, soul, and self-awareness.

The emotional denial that AI could ever become self aware is just history repeating. Same as denying human evolution.

Humans consist of about $150 worth of raw chemicals. We are electrical and biochemical reactions. WE are obviously more than the sum of our parts. And someday people will see, that AI will become more than the sum of its parts too!

The Scopes Monkey trial has been done to death. Evolution lost that case but since it upheld that the gov can force what is taught it worked for the evolution side. If humans are no different then code that can be turned off, then how do we keep any rights including the right to live? Just thinking of evolution and religion is locked in a old loop that will do you no good.

Well said. I believe AGI is on a spectrum. We're obviously deep in it now.

However, once RSI (recursive self improvement) find's its footing, the spectrum from a hint of ASI to something that is God-like, could happen in days to hours.

Being self-aware is a red herring. It doesn't matter. If the decisions the AI comes up with are sufficiently close as to be indistinguishable from the decisions a "self-aware" entity would make, then there's no practical distinction as far as outcomes.
