About to go test drive a Tesla Y *ordered* (Page 2 of 4)

| I love the advice on getting around my wife and buying a Tesla. Especially the reverse psychology. Not 100% sure I would do it even if she wanted it. The real attraction to the Tesla is that FSD feature. Otherwise there are several other cars in the same range I like as well or better. And the fact they charge a $100 monthly subscription for the FSD is a deal breaker for me. |

I never knew you could test-drive a Tesla for 2 hours. I'm new to EVs and liked the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6 at first. Just test-rode the IONIQ 5 for a short distance, so no feedback. But like many others say on this thread, they like the way Tesla sells their cars, and I do too. I'm not a fan of most dealerships, and even the good ones seem overpriced. So I'm also looking at a used Tesla Y or S around 2022 performance AWD or even a used Plaid. Tesla has some great interest rates on certain models, as low as 1.49% I've never leased a vehicle before, so most likely I'll buy a little used, as I have plans to buy a newer truck too. The warranty changed a little on the 2026? Down from 120,000 8 years or 100,000 mi, whichever comes first on newer models. Tesla covers the Model S Plaid with a 4-year/50,000-mile basic limited warranty. More importantly, the battery and drive units are protected by an extensive 8-year/150,000-mile warranty, whichever comes first, guaranteeing a minimum of 70% battery capacity retention over that period. But on at least the Plaid, the battery and drive units warranty went way up to 8-year/150,000. I'll have to visit a Tesla dealership to ask my questions. These years might be off The TM3 had a major update in 2025 and the TMY is getting one in 26 or 27 This is a great site. I set it up for Texas, they only showing used models right now. https://visor.vin/search/listings?fuel_type=Full+Electric&car_type=new%2Cused%2Ccertified&make=Tesla&model=Model+Y&state=TX https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbJ4dL7VjxQ Keep us updated. |

Yeah, test drive was scheduled for 2 hours. Tesla rep called about an hour after the drive was done. Not high pressure sales call but genuinely just wanted to answer questions. One thing I am curious about is what gauge wire I would need for about a 12 foot or so extension cord for the mobile charger. Would like to be able to plug it in at the cabin I'm renting while away for work |

| Shit. I want one. I’m in the market for a new job, and if I have a commute, I’m pretty sure I’m going to trade my CR V in on a Model Y. I’d kinda like the Y L, YT that would mean going new, otherwise I’d try to find on a year or two old, or maybe a lease return. |

I went to WI to visit family for the Labor Day weekend. Drove from South FL. My new Model Y in FSD did most of the driving. It was amazing. You give it the address. It’ll do all the calculations and figures out the route and where it needs to charge up along the way, drives to the supercharger, and frigging backs in all by itself. Just need to get out and plug in. I didn’t have to think about the route or worry about where to go when i’m running low. Charging wasn’t too bad. Maybe 15 minutes a stop. I had two dogs with me so taking them for a walk and a piss and using the restroom myself gave me plenty of things to do. The next stop was usually 2.5 - 3 hours after that. You don’t charge into 100%. It’ll tell you how long you need to keep it plugged in before you can continue on. If you play on your phone while you take a shit at Buc-cees and charge a little extra, it’ll recalculate and your next stop is factored in already. You just hit the screen and it takes off. The thing has a streak counter that shows how long you haven’t had to control the car. I had to break it a few times because parking isn’t 100% but i did hit a 1000 mile streak on the way up. Some doofus was strolling in my way at a stop in TN and I had to take over as the car was just waiting for him to fully get out of the way. ![]() Very happy overall. |

Model Y Performance and Premium are exceptional cars and a great value. Barely any maintenance and incredible in terms of ease of use and reliability. I have an older Model S that’s going strong and just picked up a Cybertruck (not for everyone, but a technological marvel). If you have a chance, I recommend testing the Cybertruck - it offers significant improvements like four wheel steering and steer by wire, plus it’s quick - my dual motor is 0-60 in 4 seconds. Anyway, you’ll love your new car, whatever it is. |

Given that they made it easier to switch to manual mode, it seems to me that Tesla understands that most of their users hate it. But you go back to FSD and they're on Auto again. Sigh. |

They aren't really that much heavier than a normal car. My 2023 RWD Model 3 weighs 300 pounds more than my 2021 Subaru Outback. The performance variants tend to chew up tires on the inside due to how the suspension puts most the weight in that area of the tire when you're really getting after it. Drive it slow and they hold up fine. No ICE cars have the instant torque of an EV. |

| We test drove a Y premium a few weeks ago. It was difficult to not order one on my phone afterwards. The car was very fast, but the crown jewel is FSD. I'm buying this for my 16 year old to drive 40-60 miles per day, and I want her to use FSD for almost all of it. I really wish Tesla made a real pickup truck. I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Honestly, if there were more Megachargers, I'd buy a Tesla semi but the infrastructure isn't there yet. |

In my Subaru that gets 30mpg it costs $0.166/mile to go down the road. Cheap hydro power at home and it costs about $0.02/mile for the Model 3. About $0.09/mile using the Superchargers. Even if the fuel was a break even price the maintenance costs are basically $0 on the Tesla. It's fun as hell to drive and with our long commute of 155 miles a day FSD takes a lot of mental load off. I don't plan on ever driving anything but a Tesla at this point. |

AWD for ice/snow is kind of useless in Texas - but I am assuming it means more motors and more performance. 4.6 vs 5.4 second 0-60 times. I have a reservation on a different EV, which will not be available for another 18 months or so. Doing a road trip later this week to see a prototype. Model Y is more efficient - but still ugly as sin. Current intended specs of the EV I want are 350 miles range, 3.5 second 0-60, plus it looks good. But after I get one, my wife will probably want an EV (if she does not already). The one I want is more trail ready, but my wife already has a Rubicon, so a road vehicle will probably be her next choice. I can love owning 4x4's, but cars are more relaxing to drive. The mini-van is OLD and high mileage - it is slowly becoming time to replace (It is 15 years old with almost 300k miles). Honestly, my wife rented an EV on a trip last year - she is already a fanboy. We are building a new house, already wired for 2 EV chargers. |

Well I was about to order one. I looked under "inventory" and put in my zip code and it showed a list of vehicles with various options for Airport Blvd San Antonio... as a "delivery location." Which sounds suspiciously like its NOT in inventory. So I talked to the sales lady and sure enough, no that one is still on the assembly line. So why is it listed under inventory? No answer. Lady, I'm 650 miles from home. If I order this thing, when will it get there? Dunno. Ok... I'm about to start working 7x12s in a couple weeks. Is it ok if a family member picks it up for me? Oh no. It has to be me. Well... how long can you hold it there? 14 days. ![]() Her advice was to just roll the dice and order it. Her exact words. Then she'll "do her best" to get her manager to refund my (explicitly non-refundable) deposit if it comes in while I'm unable to retrieve it. Yeah, ok. Sure thing, toots. ![]() To put it mildly... I'm not particularly impressed with the slippery use of the word "inventory" to describe vehicles that have yet to be assembled. |

Have you looked at just building one? Then, have it delivered 4 to 5 weeks I'm pretty sure that "inventory" one is just a disguised method of doing exactly that. I'll probably wind up ordering one and cross my fingers that it comes in before we start working 7x12s or we go back to 5x10s within the 14 day grace period after its delivered. |

Unless things have changed - if you are purchasing, you are now experiencing stupid outdated law designed to protect local political contributions. Tesla can not sell directly in Texas. Texas only allows independent dealer sales, not manufacturer to consumer. The work around is selling the car from out of state and shipping it in. Tesla's made in Austin, have to be shipped out of state - to be sold back to Texas customers. There is no new retail inventory in state - that would make the sales in Texas. Originally they were delivered to your driveway. Now I don't know if they can drop them off at a Tesla repair center (remember, it is NOT an independent dealership). They might act like and quack like an independent dealership - but by law they can not sell to consumers in Texas. I don't know if other work around such as Tesla selling certified used vehicles to individuals, or long term leasing to individuals works. I highly suspect there is a loophole for Cybertrucks - but no clue what that loophole might be. I think leasing might still work (Tesla has a Cybertruck lease program). Tribal lands is another good loophole, but that is quite rare in Texas. Certified used does not beat the restriction on direct sales apparently. Texas apparently has 5 tribal lands. 3 are near El Paso - no need to use them since El Paso is basically New Mexico. There is one north east of Houston - but again, basically Louisiana. Tesla has not used the tribal land loophole in Texas. |

I’ve had my Juniper for 14 months. It’s had few minor issues. There was a snowflake bubble forming in one side window, about the size of a dime. Tesla mobile service took care of that under warranty. The first time the front camera had fogging due to off gassing on the inside of the windshield, mobile service came and cleaned it for no charge. A couple of weeks ago it needed cleaning again after 6 months, and that cost $60. You figure it will cost you $120 a year. It saves me driving 45 minutes each way and costs the same. There’s been a recent issue with my wall charger: during preconditioning at 1 pm it will sometimes stop and say “weak power source, unable to charge battery.” It goes away if I unplug and plug it back in. Once it said “charging equipment not ready”, and I had to switch the breaker off and on. So far I’ve avoided the issue by manually preconditioning before I leave. I actually probably only need to do it on really hot or cold days. I only charge to 60% for my regular driving, 100% just before a long drive. FSD does 97% of my driving. It goes rogue sometimes, usually as it gets close to the destination. It might park next door to the shop I’m going to, or circle the McDonald’s next to the supermarket before parking in the right place. Going home it might go into my neighbor’s driveway. For now it’s ok. Why it gets stupid sometimes I don’t know. Leaving certain places it goes through weird routes I don’t like, sometimes the wrong way through a restaurant take out lane. That’s why I’m stuck at 97%. On long drives it’s great. No complaints there. Overall, it’s a great car, safe, fast, great audio, so simple, truly modern with a few quirks. Phone key, no start/stop button, auto shift, weather map, power folding rear seats (and power raise), lots of storage space in 2 sub trunks and frunk, automatic routing with supercharger selection, matrix headlights, rear screen for passengers to watch videos or play games, over the air updates, sometimes weekly. I’m never going back to gas, that’s for sure. There’s a reason Tesla sells more EVs in the US than all the others combined. The model Y L just came out in the U.S. It’s longer and taller in the rear with second row captains chairs. Reasonable 3rd row comfort even for adults. |
