The 2014 epidemic was the first Ebola epidemic to rapidly spread to several countries. I remember seeing the data in August/September 2014 and thinking "okay, this really is the big one", the slate-wiper epidemic that would spread throughout Africa. Yet even some the most corrupt and dysfunctional countries on earth (Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea) were able to eventually get it under control less than a year later. |

Bubonic plague is a bacterium that can easily be treated now, it just was not then long before antibiotics and knowledge of microbes. Ebola is a highly virulent and complex treat. If treatment is started early however you can certainly survive. It's also of high risk to anyone providing care to or handling Ebola patients or bodies. That's how the guy in Dallas caught it. He handled an infected body in Liberia, then knowing he was going to get sick he quickly flew to Germany and then to the US where his wife and some other family live. He wanted to get to first world medical care before he started showing symptoms. He ended up dying of course but none of the people who caught Ebola here in the US died. |
