I miss it as well. Between 35-40 years ago, a good friend and I would go regularly. He had the fortune to live next door to a local 1/8 mile dragstrip and a 1/2 mile oval racetrack. We helped out a lot in the pits of both and met a few "famous" racers back in the day, like Neil Bonnett and Red Farmer. However, shortly afterwards, we both got married and had kids and life took other priorities. Unfortunately, my good friend died from pancreatic cancer in late 2011.  What I miss the most now is capable, local automotive machine shops. They have all but completely disappeared in my AO. As I near retirement, I am trying to get a 1968 Camaro RS restored, and I'm not going to let some yahoo do the engine machine work. |

| Late 60s, Abilene Texas. Eddie Hill, Bobby Langley, AA fuelers. Funny cars with injectors sticking out of the hood. Gene Snow was the man to beat. When the big money teams and bracket racing arrived, I lost interest. Then came 1/8th mile tracks, bleachers 100 yards from the strip, etc. Bleah. |

| Bracket drags with our own cars were the best at Houston International Dragway in the 80's. Fill up with race gas at the Fina station north of Houston and drive your car down there. It sucked when you blew your shit up though and had to drive with a rod knock 45 miles home. |

I remember they had DeLoreans in there too... they had a red one that looked great.. |

| I lived on the west side of Indianapolis for quite a few years. Walking distance to the Indy 500 track. Girlfriends house was close to the strip where the Summer Nationals were held in Clermont. Would drive to her house and we walked the 15 min walk to the Indianapolis Raceway Park. Fun times. |
I hated going to weddings. All the grandmas would poke me and say "You're next". They stopped that when I started doing it to them at funerals.

Ran the 80,000 mile totally stock 2023 Maverick. My numbers are about what one might expect on a hot/humid Florida evening. First run was a 15.0 @91mph. I ran a 4 door charger of some kind, then I ran a late model corvette. When I say ran them, I mean we happened to be on the line at the same time. They were both in the 11’s. I did get challenged by a guy in a big dodge pickup truck. He asked me what I had under the hood, so I told him a 4 cylinder. Somehow, I forgot to mention the all wheel drive and the turbo….he ran a 16.something…. Then I parked it and watched some other folks run.   I had fun and was amazed at how reliable (80k miles so far), fast (15.0 1/4 mile) and efficient (30mpg) modern (2023) cars are. |
