And even though he eventually learned of the full scope of her fraud and acknowledged as much to Tyler, he never apologized to him. He went to his grave without providing that apology. Tyler and Erika Cheung really were incredibly courageous as whistleblowers, given the threats they faced from Holmes and the law firm representing Theranos, one of the most powerful in the country. Threats that motivated Avie Tevanian of Apple fame to resign from the Theranos board but agree to keep quiet, and drove the Theranos chief scientist to suicide. JFC, that's worse. The statement attributed to George Shultz in that article was emailed to ABC news, and frankly, it's questionable it was written by him, given he never expressed such sentiments directly to either Tyler or his family. According to Tyler, the closest his grandfather ever came was in one of their last conversations, when he told Tyler about an incident during Fleet Week, when Holmes gave a speech to Navy sailors about how her life's work was going to be saving the lives of service men and women, and that he could not believe someone could be so deceitful, especially to people putting their lives on the line for their country. That was it. That was the best he could do, so yeah, I don't believe he wrote that press release. Reads more like something his wife would have written. She really came off well in this story, even though she was just Tyler's step-grandmother, but Schultz burned down his legacy. He went from being considered a respected elder statesman to a naive rube who lacked the integrity to admit when he was wrong, perhaps even being guilty of placing his own financial enrichment above the safety of his grandson. He's now basically the Bill Belichick of former Secretaries of State. |

My wife is a director of an engineering division of a major biotech company. This group actually builds the machines that do the shit Theranos claimed theirs would do. From day 1, when she started reading about Theranos, Elizabeth Holmes, and the machine they claimed to be making, my wife took an intense interest. I remember us laying in bed reading one evening and she was reading an article about Theranos and it's amazing founder. This was long before there was any published skepticism about the company. She says "I don't know what she thinks she's making but it isn't what she claims. Maybe something got lost in translation in writing this article but there's absolutely no way that machine can do all that." Basically, her team uses the latest and greatest technology for doing this kind of work and they can't make the machines any smaller than a large cabinet. No way it was all gonna fit in something the size of a compact desktop computer. So from day one my wife followed this story and called bullshit from the get-go. When Holmes was finally sentenced my wife was ecstatic. I sent her the link to this trailer and she didn't even recognize Holmes. I had to tell her who it was. That's how different she seems from the way she publicly presented herself. This oughta be an excellent documentary. |

What I don’t understand is how so many supposedly qualified people got duped. As mentioned, George Schultz’s grandson picked up quickly this was all a fraud and paid a very dear price for it. This of course is not new, back in the day we just called these people snake oil salesman. |
