But yes, he absolutely sided with her over his grandson Tyler, and even helped setup a legal ambush of Tyler in his home, with attorneys representing Theranos there to intimidate Tyler and pressure him to sign additional NDAs under threat of financial ruin. Fortunately, George Shultz's wife (Tyler's step-grandmother) threw a flag and told Tyler to not sign anything and get out of there. Tyler's dad, George Shultz's son, subsequently had to mortgage his home to pay nearly $500K for Tyler's legal defense, while George Shultz continued to support Holmes, even after it was clear there were issues of credibility, if not outright fraud. For some time it was thought that support was simply due to George Shultz thinking of her as a daughter, but later it was revealed that in addition to his $150K annual payment for being a board member, he had also been granted 500,000 pre-IPO shares of Theranos stock. Thus, while his ineffectiveness as a board member and failure to provide any sense of corporate governance were likely primarily due to ignorance and being swayed by Holmes, he also had a financial incentive to support her, even over his own family. And even though he eventually learned of the full scope of her fraud and acknowledged as much to Tyler, he never apologized to him. He went to his grave without providing that apology. Tyler and Erika Cheung really were incredibly courageous as whistleblowers, given the threats they faced from Holmes and the law firm representing Theranos, one of the most powerful in the country. Threats that motivated Avie Tevanian of Apple fame to resign from the Theranos board but agree to keep quiet, and drove the Theranos chief scientist to suicide. |

I know that look and it is causing some very painful memories to emerge. It’s the look of a person who is very good at manipulating and knows exactly what they are doing. Every mannerism and look, head tilt, phrase, voice inflection, etc. is calculated for maximum effect. I want to see this but I am afraid that it would hit a little too close to home given some of my childhood and adolescent experiences. |
