I would still be surprised if as a % of their defense spending their reliance on US companies meaningfully decreased.

Think we're still the big dog in the game and guessing Russia has properly scared them into spending a couple bucks more

I think it's all theater.

I don't think we're getting a cut, but I also don't think we're getting a hike.

<- have quite a few bucks in interest rate plays, so I am putting money behind the thesis

Weird. I just watched a video where a guy took a yatch from Chicago through the Erie canal to New York City then down to Florida. My eyes must have been lying to me.

Potential cargo volume may be lower through the Erie canal, but the "no other way" claim is a lie.

You can get modest barges down the Erie but nothing like the big Mississippi river barges.   I’m picturing the gravel barges that hauled to NYC down the Champlain canal.   I’m guessing the tonnage of those was about 6 to 8 32 foot dump trailers of volume.   I’m WAG in that not even SWAG.

The locks and the available draft along the way are the limits.   I learned that the loadings are carefully crafted to not run aground and not hit the bridges by company engineers not the Captain of the Tug.   They hit a bridge by being a foot too tall and got the bridge shut down for a week or more to get some repairs.   That’s when I learned that the loading and draft is set up for them.

Barging oil was a bigger thing back in the day here.   They do still barge oil, iirc a lot of it is NYC oil but is stored in facilities upstate like in Albany/Rensselaer on the Hudson.   There is barge traffic with oil around Utica and Syracuse but I have no idea where or two, just that they’re there on the canal with storage depots.

You do realize that we managed before the well and canal was built

There is a reason Buffalo has some of the largest rail yards and the largest breakwater on the lakes is the port of Buffalo.  Not all the infrastructure is there anymore. But you could bypass through Buffalo if need be.

All that freight that went by ship stopped in buffalo before the welland canal from Lake Erie to Lake America was built.  It all got offloaded from the ships in Buffalo and loaded onto freight trains and shipped to NYC, Philly, etc to then get loaded onto ships to go overseas.

We are capable of bypassing the St Lawrence seaway.  It would be slower, more work, and more expensive……but it would create a lot of jobs.

Just saying.

And we could Naval blockade the St. Lawrence.

Just saying.

They have one pipeline that can get their oil to a coast.  at most it can move about 1/4 of what they sell to the US every day.   New pipelines are the third rail of canadian politics because they are leftist retarded idiots.  They aren't even approved yet and it'll be a fight.  Even once they are approved they will take years to build.

That was predictable.  If you wanted to destroy Iran’s economy, you stop their oil exports.  Since China is who buys Iran’s oil, you need to give them another supply and make it appear that you are giving Canada win and not starting a war with China over oil (you might recall that is how we got into a war with Japan).

Presto, Chango, Trump did some magical 52D chess, you never saw it coming and he hurt Iran even more.  That’s called winning.

TM was Expanded in 2024 and added 590,000 barrel per day capacity. It's running wide open. The next phase adding another 90,000 barrels a day is under construction and will complete in 2027. By 2028 the pump stations will be expanded pushing total capacity to 1.2M barrels a day. In July another pipeline following most of the same corridor was announced with a new Terminal in Point Roberts. Adding an additional 1 million barrels a day capacity. Construction will start before the end of 2027.

These expansions have improved the price of WCS against WTI because there's now a wider market.

The 90K isn't a new pipeline, it's flow restriction reduction.  1.2 mbpd is roughly 1/4 of what they sell to us, exactly as I said.

That pipeline isn't even actually approved, that's a proposal. The current Canadian federal government and the previous one had a no new pipeline policy, they hate them because they are green cultists.

this is the only currently formally proposed pipeline..Alberta west coast ...and it's only a proposal. Barring an emergency this will take years of canadian consultations and bullshit before they even agree to build it. Then they gotta build it.

so again I say....get the fuck outta here.

Aluminum. Basicly half of the new aluminum the us uses comes from Canada. Most of the rest is imported as well. Tariff on canadian aluminum is now up to %50.

Its actually a double hit, since the aluminum we buy from Canada is refined out of ore we mine in the US. Tariffs increasing the cost of aluminum suck for industries that buy the metal, which is near all of them, but also the companies mining the ore which now face lower demand and Canadian tarrifs.

My employer buys a lot of aluminum. All of it comes from Canada. This isn't an abstract thing for me. We keep getting told this is all to benefit American manufacturers like us, but we will be lucky to avoid layoffs at this rate.

All we need to do is build nukes.

It's not so much an ore deposit issue as it is a cheap electricity issue.

It takes so much energy to smelt aluminum it's basically precipitated electrons.   Niagara falls makes some juice. One of the biggest producers in the world is actually named Hydro.
The stuff i bought last week was from hydro.

Canada has plenty of power, so they are very competitive in that market.  I assume given the size of Americas hat, they probably have the bauxite as well.

Energy should be dirt cheap in the US. There is nothing in Canada that has some huge advantage we don't have.

After the Vietnam and Civil Rights Era protests the USSR funded they switched over to targeting our energy sector. A lot of the anti-nuke and early environmentalism was encouraged and funded by the USSR. That is why to this day a lot of those same people are watermelons. Green on the outside but commie red on the inside. Western environmentalists are almost always also hardcore commies or socialists. They just use environmental activism as a wedge issue that back in the 70's and 80's led to panics and scare tactics over nuclear energy or even basics like oil/gas/industrial chemicals.

We still do this day have a ton of foreign influence campaigns that directly target key areas the foreign actors don't want us to succeed in. We're still dealing with bullshit consequences of activist funding the from the USSR days. It's an absolutely great investment on their part. They basically spend peanuts and get retards over here to devote their life to carrying their water.

American society is neither as spartan, or as enthusiastic about conquest as GD would like. Most Americans like their absurd little luxuries like cheap soda now and then and probably don’t like the idea of shivering in the cold in a vast, frozen wasteland like Canada.

Of all the negotiating tactics available, only a complete moron would chose to meet Trump in the arena that he enjoys most.

I know why they did it, and it worked in the short term, but all they've done is entertain Trump.  Economically this isn't a fight.  It's a beating that has only one outcome, and now that outcome will either require or result in the liberal party losing power, and it's the most predictable outcome in recent memory.

So if they aren't complete morons, what was the actual goal?

Apparently their environmental study and permitting process for business and industry is excruciating and absurd EU and california style... I guess some companies have looked forward to decade waiting on this and just said fuck it and walked away.

To me Carney is acting like US politicians like the democrats.  He put his party and personal political motives ahead of his nation.    He needed to keep the Quebecois faction backing him as well as a few others.  The deal was torpedoed to get wins in several by election votes to retain his and his party’s power coalition.  It was readily apparent if he signed the deal he would pay for it by losing those elections and his hold on their majority.   He was flat out lying to his nation on how things were going.  Doug Ford told him the day of the end of negotiations not to do it because his local auto and metals industry would be unhappy. He didn’t agree to sign it and made up the last minute demands issue.   lol French language on imported US dairy and other minor crap.

I wouldn’t be so sure the Liberals will be turned out over this. The average Canuck hates America and Americans so bad they can taste it….the Liberals can get away with just about anything so long as they can convince the sheeple it’s hurting us.
