Update 8/26 Last update for the week....... My sons flew home for a little family reunion this weekend, so we will be up at the cabin enjoying eachothers company.  Hopefully my very new classes can manage for a couple days. Normally, not a problem, but this is pretty early, and we don't have all of our materials here yet, and there are lots of questions about our direction right now. Kids are getting last directions for the next couple days and hopefully they keep up the great work I've seen so far. It's amazingly fun to teach my classes so far this year. We are having a pretty good time all day long. Everybody is so enthusiastic. It's pretty awesome as a teacher. Team Leader and now Senior- Dayton  Last year, only a Freshman, and this year taking on an enthusiastic leadership role in her group already......Aubrey  Part of my Team Shark! Addie, Leora, Maysyn, and about to cut me with the jigsaw for some smartass comment I made.....  Ellora! Great group of young ladies that did so well last year, and are back making the whole project seem easy. Charlotte is back 2hrs a day, and is doing great work, taking on a leading role.  Kamryn and Emma back as Seniors doing some excellent work as always. My crazy Sophomore boys from last year are also back as Juniors and I know they will be doing some fantastic work again.  |

ProTip: Never pick a fight with a tree planter. He swings a hoedad for 9 hours a day, carries 30-40 pounds of seedlings on his back, and has 12-14 friends just like him hiding out on the other side of the junk butt pile. They will fuck your shit up.

You mentioned adding a shark to the display. Wouldn't fit very well with the military ships, but a great white biting a hole in Ben Gardner's boat would be awesome.  ETA-I see you're doing a full size tiger shark. Want a small(about 4" wide) set of jaws from one to get tooth shape and positioning down? Attached File |

Update 8/31 I'm back from my little family reunion with my boys. We had a great few days together. Ran them to Billings this morning at 4am.  When I got to school today, it definitely looked like the kids were working.......maybe a bit overzealous. Foam seemed to be a number one material being utilized on Friday. Everyone wanted in on the action, and we went a little off track. The enthusiasm was good, so there is that. 1st off..... @GiggleSmith ........ Wow!!!!!! Thank you!!!! Crazy generous of you good Sir! Outstanding! Kids were pretty floored today when they opened the letter.   If you can't read the money order, it's for $1000   Siren - Looks like they got a bit creative about some of the decorations that will be on our column with the Siren. We are a bit early on this level of detail, so we will put them aside until it's time.  Charlotte and Kamryn working on figuring out how far our tiers should be separated on the pole.  U.S.S. Arizona - Landon M. and Carter working on the bottom sea area of the display tier. We are adding chicken wire first, then a base of burlap and glue. We will probably add some spray foam over top before acrylic details.  Tiger shark- The kids cut out quite a few cross sections, but I think we need to revisit the contours and sizes. We used AI to try to generate a cross section diagram, but It did not do a very good job, and we think it got the front shape all wrong. We may just have to go with different vies and free hand them. The girls have one done, and it looks pretty darn good. We may use the AI for the sections further back from the main fin.  |

I managed to leave my phone at home today, so the update will again be in the afternoon.  I'm just about caught up with beginning instructions for all the classes, so I can get more photos taken and more details documented. We are doing something a bit different with communication between groups this year. I'm having each group write out what they accomplished and what needs done next at the end of each hour. The incoming class then reads the write up so they are up to speed, and I don't have to go around and explain everything to each group. I'm still doing a check with each group, but it's saving time. In these beginning days, it's been super helpful to the groups knowing what was done the previous hour. Groups will probably start diverging as more tasks and parts of the project become relevent. |

Folks have asked for a list of materials or tools that we are in need of. I have a few things that we could use right now. Sherwin -Williams in Cody, WY is having a 30% off bucket sale this week. They will deliver right to our school or my house. Some great guys work there, including arfcom members here. (307) 527-1118- Ask for Mark, he can set you up. We are in need of : Green Frog tape in various widths..... 1", 2", Roller extensions, colapsable Purdy 2" brushes Latex gloves, large fit most hands best(duplicates are welcome here) 1 gal of SW 6941 Nifty Turquoise Super Paint..... eggshell I'll try to put together some Amazon lists soon. There are some tools and replacement tools that are needed. I just haven't had a chance to get a list yet. |

Update 9/1 Layla posing with our Mermaid's column. Slowly building up. We still have 3 tiers to add before we can start deciding how to fill it in.  This is the tier that our wrecked ship will be on, above our Siren. It is upside down at the moment, waiting for more framing.  We have multiple people doing some painting. They decided to get some base coat colors down first, then go back and blend and thicken the coats. This is the 1st wall they wanted to tackle.  Landon P made quick work of the Deep Sea Diver stand and castors. We will begin adding chicken wire soon, then burlap and glue.  This is the new midsection of our Tiger shark. It is at the 6' mark, mid body. The AI contours did not work for the nose, but we are working with the shapes as a guide for the midsections. Our sizes are coming off of a better done diagram.  David, Sean, and Landon P checking for fitment of our F-4U's seabed structure. We will have to move our power cords a bit, but I think this is going to work well.  Hayden cut the outer 2x4s today, and Carter and Landon M got them screwed onto the frame. This is rightside up. We will add a sheet of 1/2" plywood to the top for the seabed floor.  |

Update 9/2 The days go sooooooo fast....... Side Project Driftwood Sheep- Layla working on staining the white weathered bottoms of the horns. She is going to put a coat of boiled linseed oil on there at the end, and then probably buff a bit with steel wool. Landon P had a basic frame welded up yesterday, but we need to make a few adjustments to it's pose before we continue.  Siren's column- Kennly, Carter, and Reece working on getting the last couple tiers up and secured in place. Later in the morning, Charlotte, Zoe, Kamyn, and Emma worked to finish the tiers, and start adding chicken wire to fill and sculpt the coral formation.  Mural work- Morgan and Reagan adding more paint. Morgan has a very precise vision in his head for how he'd like to see the colors go, so I'm letting him take charge with the planning on that.  F-4U Seabed- Beth helped Sawyer get the plywood fitted to the top of our seabed tier.  Wrecked pirate ship coastline- Gianreye, and Landon M got the tier up above the bow of the U-boat to check for fitment. I think we figured out how to get it where we want it. We may have to build out our french cleats a bit, but I think we can make it work.   Team Shark- Brielle, Ellora, Rilee, and Leora........ scaling each section of our shak and drawing them out. They made quick work today and got all of them cut out to scale.  F-4U The Great Dane working on our 1/48 scale model. Getting it ready so we can start making parts to scale.  |

I think looking at the ones I bought yesterday, they are "IM" type. I scratched the hoses and fittings off the list, just now, as I grabbed some yesterday when I was at ACE. The girls were hounding me about it, so I just grabbed them. We are pretty well set for them now. |
