| Best firewall is a hardware router. I've been on broadband for 3+ years now. It gets scanned and hit ALL THE TIME and in those 3 years the ONLY time I've been penetrated was my own damn fault (an improperly configured IIS server). Fixed that and never once have been touched. |

A router is not necessarily a firewall. Actually it really isn't a firewall by definition. All your router does is route traffic to the appropriate computer. It may use NAT (Network Address Translation) to share a single IP the world can access with multiple computers within your network the world cannot see which provides a barrier to outside hackers. It may also provide a genuine firewall within it but make sure that is the case rather than simply purchasing a router that provides NAT and calls that a firewall. As stated NAT does hide you to a large extent from the outside world but if you download some worm that contains a trojan of some kind it will not block traffic from your computer to the outside world like a true firewall would. |
