I wonder if he got to see the Spaceship One flight before he passed?  That would be a hell of a thing, if so.  I certainly hope that he did.

Go, Hot Dog, GO!

On a day when we celebrate the common man's first opportunities to travel to space, we also must commemorate the likes of Shepard, Grissom, Glenn, Carpenter, Schirra, Cooper and Slayton - the original Mercury Seven astronauts. So too should we remeber that there once existed in the high desert a rare breed of man who would fly the wings off of anything he could get his hands on: Crossfield, Yeager, Knight, Edwards and many more.

To all the pioneers of high-speed, high-altitude and space flight, thanks for the dreams!

Gordon Cooper, God be with you.

You are now flying the highest orbit...

Not to hijack the thread but -
You know, these guys flew these rockets into space and back on calculations from engineers who used these, not floating point calculators:

The faith in fellow man during this time was/is astounding!

Whenever one of them go, it kind of hurts.
They were and still are my heroes.
When I was young they captured my imagination,
and I wanted to be like them.
They are a breed apart.

Off we go, into the wild blue yonder...
