I searched and found nothing. https://www.sigsauer.com/blog/sig-m17-with-sig-romeo-m17-red-dot-optic-selected-as-the-official-sidearm-of-the-texas-department-of-public-safety Wonder how good of a deal they got on the pistols? I'm not near up to speed with the Sig issues. Does the M17 have the self-firing feature? |

DPS is solidly a SIG fanboy operation. They will never carry anything else and write their purchase requirements to ONLY fit a Sig. The fact the damn thing may not work does not really matter. When they tried to swap Sigs for M&P's a few years back they practically had a mutiny. Same with the switch to 9mm from .357 Sig. |

Quoted: They already carry the P320 so I don’t understand why they are switching to the M17. Piss on a thumb safety for a duty pistol. I'm assuming they're getting deals cut for the complete guns with the Sig LOC, optic mount plus their top-of-the-line m17 enclosed optic. Initially, the m17/m18 that were sig loc compatible were the Govt sale version. they've recently released some SKU's with the SIG LOC mount to open market. |

Quoted: optic cut. Their current 320's don't have optics and they want them. Makes sense. Since they've been running them this long, apparently without killing themselves, perhaps they have figured things out. 320 Compact, M17, M18 owner. I like them Own most of the other stuff as well. |

If not, safety manipulation is DEFINIETLY going to require extensive training to make it a subconscious action on the draw. I'd worry more about the non-gun people... Same comment for using an RDS.....train, train, train. |

Quoted: Haven't they been issuing P320s since 2015? Are they just switching to M17s because they want the manual safety? ![]() I can see issues with some cops already, they never used a gun with a manual safety, and now oops, shit my gun won't go bang in the time of need. If you want a manual safety 1911 or 2011 |

If you want a manual safety 1911 or 2011 No and no. lol Everyone who has ever trained with an AR, which should be nearly every MIL and LE guy in the Western world at this point, has or at least should have trained with a manual safety. 1911s are obsolete as duty guns, and 2011s have their own issues, but there are a bunch of other manual safety guns that work well. If the P320 didn't have the internal issues that are coming to light, I'd be cool with a M17 as a duty gun. The price and the performance is there. |

By the time they get done with in-service training for the new guns I doubt the safety manipulation will be an issue. |

Quoted: They didn't have a mutiny, the M&Ps shit the bed in the initial academy roll out. Yeeeaah, about that. No one has ever been to replicate their range "testing". Austin PD rolled out the 9mm M&P (to replace the .40 M&P) with MORE testing, at exactly the same time with zero issues and still carries it today. |

They issued it to a recruit class and the guns had issues. One of the guys I used to work with was in the class. He said most of the guns had multiple malfunctions, to the point that after the first week they pulled in the M&Ps and issued them the old Sigs. |

Giving a gun to untrained cadets for probably a total of 10 hours range time. APD on the other hand, put the gun into the hands of anyone that wanted to shoot one (along with the Glock, which was the competitor) and spent 6 months running them thru the ringer. I personally, fired 4 K rounds thru a specific test gun M&P not counting the rounds everybody ELSE shot thru that gun. The only issue was that the Trijicon sights did not hold up. (Front sights breaking) I was a range instructor at the academy during the rollout of the M&P for APD. We had more guys have trouble using a new holster than we did using the gun. At the exact time DPS cadets was having "issues", 1500 APD officers were happily shooting the same model just fine during a 500 round transition course. APD is currently looking at buying M&P's for a THIRD issue of the platform as they want to go with an issued optic. The P320 BTW is not allowed carry for APD and is banned from the range. It may interest you to know that DPS considers the Glock to be unsuited for issue too, despite it being used by 7 out of every 10 depts in the country. |

Quoted: Eh, there are a number of full-size 9mm guns that I would choose over the M17. Glock is only one of them. Attached File |

A gun that doesn't go bang when you want it to or one that goes bang when you don't want it to? A 320 with a manual safety is the ultimate get both. |

There are a shitload of cops in WA at least that only have the department issued gun and only carry said gun when on duty. They only shoot said gun for qualification purposes and many of these officers need a few attempts to pass. The "gun guy" cops are pretty much disgusted by these people, but there are many of them. |

If I wanted to ensure a rollout of a new platform that I opposed went poorly, leading to a return to an old platform I supported, it sounds like exactly the right course of action. You can usually look at such situations and with enough digging, find one or two people at the top who are thoroughly set in their ways and utterly immune to logic or rationality. Or else getting paid handsomely by someone to make a certain decision. |
