We were in a huge pace line doing about 42-45mph I was third wheel. I saw a bunny jump out and shoot into the road. Naturally, I lifted the front wheel. Just so happened at the exact moment it shot into us. I could feel its bones crunch as I unweighted my rear wheel as I rode over it. The poor thing ragged dolled and flew to the side of the road. That would have been a huge pile up if not for my superior handling skills.  CSB  |

Finally getting longer rides in. Loading bike way down, 67lbs with gear.  Got 63 miles in, absolutely soaked for 16 of them. Torrential downpour. I actually enjoy riding in the rain but i think I absorbed another 10lb of water. Still getting stamina back, my two surgeries have kept me off the bike far longer than I had hoped. RAGBRAI is going to be 107 drgrees on the first day, the hottest day in the event's history if it proves true. Also calling for a steady 20mph headwind the whole 62 miles, and its like 3600' of climb. Should be a great day. Attached File |

When I did RAGBRAI 50 in 2023, the worst part was getting the baggage on and off the truck, it was a long wait, and took the best parts of the day. I met a guy on the second day at a Hy-Vee and he had his bike there beside him and I just started asking questions. I had never heard of bikepacking before. Well, by the end of the night, I was dead set on doing it the next time I did RAGBRAI. So here we are. I don't know if I love it or not. The hills are a LOT harder, and at least the hills I'm training on, kick my ass. They aren't particularly long, but a 300' climb at 17%+ is brutal when your bike has over 40lbs of gear on it. I never thought I'd run out of gears, but I do. This bike, I'm undergeared on both sides. I have a 36T chainring and a 10-51 cassette (GRX DI2 1x12) and according to most bikepacking advice, you should have low gear be less than 19 gear inches, and my low gear is above 20. On the top end I have 36/10 which is 101 gear inches, which, isn't great frankly. 100RPM in top gear nets me a paltry 30MPH, so decents are mostly gravity assist and not much more. All that is to say, you lose evaporative cooling when you climb, the climbs take AGES longer, you're not nearly as aero (with all my gear on, 250w nets me around ~17mph on flat ground, vs ~21mph on my Roubaix). All that is to say, it's harder. It's a lot harder.I have also found a new appreciation for the limitations I have as a T1 Diabetic as well. Two friends came over and we were going to do the same ride I just posted before. I said let's leave at 9AM, I took my daughters out to donuts, thinking I could burn that fuel as I'm riding and my sugar wouldn't spike. Well, my friend didn't charge his helmet (we all have Senas), he didn't install bottle cages on his new bike, he had never set up his water bladder, he didn't torque down the bolts on his racks, etc etc. Instead of 9AM, we left at 10:20AM, and by then my glucose level was 320 (insanely high). Well, I didn't know this, but you lose nearly all of your evaporative cooling capacity if your glucose climbs about 170 or so. Your blood vessels constrict and your body keeps all the blood as close to the core as possible. This prevents the body from getting the heat to the surface. As a response, your heart pumps faster, thinking it just needs more flow, and your sweating ramps up to make up for the lost heat carrying capacity of the circulatory system. Well, that dehydrates you faster, which further stresses your heart as every 1% drop in hydration levels increases heart rate 6bpm. Net, by the halfway point, my HR was 180 RESTING and I couldn't cool down, I was sweating BUCKETS and getting light headed. My HR was north of 188 for 73% of the ride (aka was in my Z5). I've never felt so unwell in my entire life, and that's when I posted that I think I hate bikepacking, thinking the extra weight (that was my first day riding with full gear on) was to blame. Research led me to the truth, which was my blood glucose levels were 100% to blame. I feel a lot better now, and I just need to make sure I keep my blood sugar levels in check. Which I normally do, so I just know not to trust this guy's time schedule. I'll keep him in check...those same two guys are doing RAGBRAI with me this year. It will be a good time. Tell your buddies that are going to look for my orange/grey Cutthroat and to say hi if they see me. I always enjoy meeting new people; it's one of the cool things about RAGBRAI.  Attached File |

The triathlon last weekend was messy. 10mph winds gusting at 20. The far swim buoy broke from its anchor and no one told my wife's heat until they'd been chasing it for a good 10 minutes. I'm happy to say I didn't get passed on the bike, and finished 3rd in my age group. |

So it looks like I'll be hauling at least five bikes a thousand miles and back this coming Thanksgiving. Is there a better solution than a vertical hitch rack? This is what I've come up with.. Thule ReVert Alta 6 Pack Velocirax 6 Max Recon Rack JB Racks If any of you have experience or suggestions, I'd appreciate your input. |

I bought the JB racks because the baskets were wide enough to hold my fat bike and its a piece of fucking shit. the very first thing it did was almost bounce out my bike out on a small size bump leaving my neighborhood. I've had to modify the shit out of it to make it actually hold my bikes safely. if that wasn't bad enough its flimsy as shit, total garbage, its a piece of shit. |

Shiny Chris King hubs but no Berd spokes?  Thanks also for all the input re racks. I'm going to KISS and use the two bike rack we already have, disassemble my older daughter's bike and put it in the bed, and rent one at our destination. I was being selfish, planning to take two bikes for myself |

She will hold, and you have thebadded benefit of keeping an eye on your bike and also, if you crunch it, its on you vs the guy behind you.

week two of enjoying Seattle on vacation....I will be here for three weeks. First week did 260 miles around seeing friends and fam. This weekend I have to do family stuff in Bellingham then I get to ride more when back in Seattle. Nice weather compared to Texas right now lol |

Traveled to Decatur for a week but only managed to get out for a ride twice. And the bike at the Air B&B was a crap-tastic Big-Box Schwinn hardtail, 2 sizes too small for me. Attached File But I still had a GREAT TIME! If in doubt, get off yer butt and ride! |

I have some 2020 carbon wheels from We Are One on my S-works pictured above; only have a few races on mine, since the bike is new to me. But a friend’s teen races downhill here in Virginia, and he said I shouldn’t worry about the We Are One wheels; I’ll never break them. I think I9 bought We Are One, but they left the manufacturing plant intact up in Canada to run semi-autonomously. |

There's a newish, nearly 3-mile long bench cut trail on the mountain. It's mostly downhill, with about 200 feet of climbing and nearly 1000 feet descent. Attached File Some sections still need a bit of work - rain might help. It doesn't smell bad, but the smoke's been lingering. Had a run in with a moose calf and cow. Fortunately, they were as surprised to see me as I was them. Never been so close, never want to be that close again. |

This thing is a fk'n truck! Got the dropper rigged up and functional, and the new meats mounted and sealed today. I'm swapping out the XT shifter w/ bar mount for the one that integrates with the SLX brake-lever mount for a much cleaner finish. Also waiting on some stuff from Paul Components: stem-cap, bar ends, and a +20mm IS-to-post rear caliper mount. Once all that shit gets here, I'll finish mocking the cockpit up, bleed the brakes, and finally trim the steering tube and handlebar ends. XT rear derailleur is hung but I still need to wrap the XTR chain, and plumb and tune it. Apologies for the lame photo, but I'm getting close! Attached File |

Just called Fox Racing on a whim to hunt down some cheap plastic spacers to adjust the ride-height of my Transfer dropper post. These things are literally just some slip-on 5mm split-rings worth about $0.02 a pop, but I can't seem to find them anywhere except from Europe for $30+ shipped. Well I lucked out and talked to a guy named Alex at the NC factory, and he's got me hooked up, free of charge; this sorta shit never happens to me.   Quick update on the build: All that's left to do is mount the rear brake caliper, and bleed the whole system. The steering tube needs to be trimmed and the stem-cap set. That's pretty much it. I took it in to the shop to have the drivetrain gone thru and tuned, so everything is buttery-smooth now. I was pretty close, but just couldn't get each gear to shift cleanly. One thing about the rear brake mount; Stanton uses a post-style mount for 140mm rotor, but everyone (including Dan Stanton himself) seems to believe all that's needed to run a 180mm rotor is a +20mm IS (international-standard)-to-post adapter mount. So that's what I bought, but come to find out, I need a +40 IS-to-post adapter. So once again, I'm annoyed and waiting for parts. 😤 Attached File |
