Ortiz’s path to becoming the most battle-decorated member of America’s first spy agency and one of the most decorated Marines of World War II was unlike any other. Born in New York and raised between California and France, he would have stints as a merchant seaman, dude ranch manager, race car driver, lion tamer, circus performer, and Hollywood stuntman and actor. As a teenager, Ortiz ran away from boarding school in France to join the French Foreign Legion. He first experienced combat in North Africa against tribesmen in the Sahara. Fighting on the front lines against the Germans in 1940, he was badly wounded and captured. He repeatedly escaped, one time fleeing a hospital train after assuming the identity of a dead soldier. Docking in the US the day after Pearl Harbor, Ortiz enlisted in the Marine Corps. As someone who could speak French like a native--and get by in Arabic, German, and Spanish, the dashing former Legionnaire immediately stood out. Instead of being deployed to the Pacific like the majority of Marines, Ortiz was recruited by the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) - America’s World War II forerunner to the Central Intelligence Agency for special operations in North Africa and Europe. In 1944, Ortiz parachuted into France on two top-secret inter-Allied missions. Operating deep behind enemy lines, he traveled throughout Southeastern France—at times donning his Marine uniform—arming and training the Maquis, blowing up Nazi infrastructure, and aiding downed Allied airmen. Rotating his many covers, including as a fashion designer and minor Vichy government official—he infiltrated Nazi gatherings and funneled intelligence about German positions back to OSS London ahead of D-Day. By the time he escaped across the Pyrenees, he was among the Gestapo’s most wanted. Two months after the Normandy landings, Ortiz jumped back into the French Alps, this time with a team of Americans he recruited for “Le Grand Parachutage,” a drop that sent more than 150 tons of supplies raining down to the Maquis to fight the Axis. Badger—the last surviving vessel of its kind. Launched in September 1952 by the Christy Corporation in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, the Badger entered service in March 1953 carrying up to 34 railroad cars across Lake Michigan for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway. She later served the Chessie System and CSX Transportation before Michigan-Wisconsin Transportation (MWT) took over operations in 1983. The Badger continued hauling railroad cars until November 1990, when declining rail traffic and rising labor costs brought an end to railroad carferry service on Lake Michigan. But the story of the Badger was far from over. In 1991, West Michigan businessman Charles Conrad—who had worked aboard the carferries as a young man—purchased MWT's remaining assets, including the three surviving C&O carferries. Conrad transformed the Badger into an automobile ferry, and in 1992, she began a new chapter carrying passengers, automobiles, trucks, and equipment between Ludington, Michigan, and Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Today, she remains one of the largest and continues to sail Lake Michigan as a passenger and vehicle ferry—and remains the last coal-fired steamship in active service in the United States. The U.S. government set about acquiring 18,000 acres of land in just a few months to build the plant. There were 746 people displaced from the area, which included the elimination of the villages of Hamburg, Howell and Toonerville. The area being St. Charles County, which is just across the Missouri River from St. Louis County in Missouri. The quartermaster corps hired a land optioner from KC that secured nearly all the land deals, but the cost came in significantly higher than the original estimates. A senator, vehemently anti-war, got involved and claimed corruption. They never found corruption but the army fired the colonel in charge of land acquisition and brought in a lawyer. He started condemnation proceedings against the land owners, paying them 30-40% of the contracts they signed with the government agent. This left half the residents in an awful state which the others having been paid already. The people revolted and filed suit in federal court. The government played some shenanigans in the court cases, losing at the district court, winning at the appellate court and losing at the U.S. Supreme Court, with the decision coming out in 1945. The people got paid their money but some land owners had died, and many struggled since they lost so much. We also cover the building of the plant. At one point they had 8000 workers building it, and 5000 working at it. we look at how the plant operated with all the moving parts of making TNT and DNT. We also track the impact of the plant, which had TNT in Iowa class battleship shells. There was a series of horrific accidents as the plant started operating. Finally we cover the lives of the workers, some of which lived in temporary camps. |

Discussion on Sir George Lea The Soldiers' General: Sir George Lea  The Soldiers' General: Sir George Lea Educated at Charterhouse School and Sandhurst, George Lea was commissioned into the Lancashire Fusiliers in 1933. In WW2 he served in the 4th Parachute Brigade and then was commanding officer of 11th Battalion, Parachute Regiment. He led this unit into Arnhem in Operation Market Garden but became a prisoner of war. Postwar Lea played a significant role in the Malayan Emergency in the mid 1950s when commanding 22 Special Air Service Regiment and then in the Indonesian Confrontation in the mid 1960s as Director of Operations. He was very much a “soldiers' general” who, through his fantastic people skills, and leadership qualities could always bring the best out of those around him. |
