I am looking to buy a new PC and was wondering when the new OS will be out to replace XP? I hate buying something and having something else come out 2 weeks later. Is it in the long term or within months?

Months?
Buy XP home or professional and don't worry about it.
Or buy a version of Linux.

I heard that they may push it back so far, it will either be replaced by another Windows OS already in development, or merged with it. Don't hold your breath for the next Windows (unless you have a 64 bit processer, then you can upgrade early next year).

There's no need to buy Linux when it's free.

I don't think you will see Longhorn for at least a year and probably even longer.

Oh, and I follow the Linux path too.  Always something new coming out there.
