This time though it's DI

no 6.5 yet though

Not terrible but not chrome or nitride, 4140 steel barrel, and the rail doesn't have tabs around the upper.... apparently it has a nitride barrel and on closer look the handguard has tabs around the upper

Good on Ruger

.308 > 6.5
DI > Piston

My opinion

Looks a like a solid contender to the Rogue, as far as weight is concerned. I’d be interested in seeing the bolt face.

Ruger had a robust piston irrc. They should have kept it. There are too many di manufacturers.

7.2 for the 20".

Their budget AR’s are solid.  Their piston system was a little too heavy for my tastes but the multi caliber options was a cool concept.

Big 'ol chonky barrel because the average Ruger fan will slap on a chinese scope and hammer away with tula 308.

Another reminder that Ruger supports the ATF.

About the only thing to have become standardized in the .308 AR world thus fat are mags. The SR25 style mag has become the standard...... mainly because PMags are made in this variety

Armalite (and I'm sure others; RRA made something like this at one point) made large frame AR style guns with M1A mag functionality.

AR-10B mags were based on M14 mags.

RRA had a large frame AR that took FAL mags.

I was looking at the S&W M&P10 and the SIG 716.  But I think this Ruger in a 16" probably has my money.

I like the small frame design. I do need to get me one someday, maybe this will be the one that does it for me. I would prefer a full rail on the handguard for a 16" rifle, but that's just me.

@45-Seventy, haven't you mentioned seeing POF Rogues with broken bolts before (I could be thinking of someone else)?

I have… three I can think of. One is a guy I shoot 3-Gun with. He bought it specifically for a race gun due to size/weight. He’s abandoned it due and went to a standard DI system.

Now the G2 system really seemed promising and I’m not familiar with widespread failures. I’m curious why it never really went anywhere.

4140 isn’t a great choice for a heavy use barrel when 4150 is widely available.

If that’s actually what it is.

I absolutely LOVE, my ruger SR762, ACCURATE AS HELL ! 5 shot one hole groups no problem.

I’ll never sell it, regret selling my second one, which was just as accurate. Iv got 3 spare BCGs for it. I’ll buy another one if I ever find one reasonable.

GREAT GUNS.

Yup. Add in the factory 4.5 trigger out the box and your set.

I don’t have a .308 AR but this is tempting.

YMMV but I hate it when manufacturers fuck with the magazine opening in the lower like that. First, they may think it looks "cool" but I don't. Second, that "zig-zag" cut just make it more likely for some part of a mag to get hung up on the opening.

M14, not FAL.  The Bushmaster BAR-10 used the FAL mags.

That said, the AR10 mags I own have been robust and reliable.

I do prefer the Pmags.

M14, not FAL

Bushmaster (and then later RRA) made an FAL-based .308 AR.

It's a chonky boy.

(ETA: that's a 16" on the top and an 18" on the bottom, lol)

I take it that you are not a fan of the 8.6??  lol.   Why, because I like oddball guns.  Ive got plenty of .308s and a small frame AR in 8.6 to go with my NON Q Silencerco Hybrid could be FUN.

I love what Ruger produces and I’m sure it will be quality. They’ve done great by resurrecting Marlin.

I just wish they would produce more of the lineup they offer. I would LOVE to buy a Hawkeye Hunter in an interesting caliber if they just made enough to be in stock anywhere.
