I'm looking for the best compromise of quality and price in the under-$100 range for a 6" or 8" bench grinder. I do not want something made in Communist China if I can avoid it. Any suggestions? Thanks! |

I don't know of anything that will fit what you are looking for but there are a couple of things you can improvise. One, if you come across the belt driven arbor type at a garage sale you could put just about any motor under a bench and and do ok. Also, if you have a radial arm saw, buy a wheel with a 5/8" arbor and you will get better power by far than just about anything else. Build a rest and make sure you know how to lock the head down securely. Make sure the wheel is rated for the rpms of any motor you mount it to. In case you or others don't know, always have the guards in place. Tap the side of the wheel and listen for it to ring before you wind it up. A dull sound means it is cracked. Let it run at speed for a minute and stay to the side. If it lets go and you are in the way it can put some serious hurt on you. Don't force material into it and cause the surface of the wheel to heat up too quickly, that can also cause it to fail. Keep the tool rest just out of surface contact and hold the material being ground so that the wheel cannot catch it. Use the safety eye or face shields and (not or) safety goggles. A tool like this calls for double eye protection. |
