My dear wife, bless her heart, is an intelligent woman. The only major mistake she made was when she married me.

For some reason that I cannot understand, she watches every so called reality TV show that comes up. Big Brother, Survivor, Airline, The Bachelor, The Bachlorette, Who Wants to Marry My Dad, the one about the funeral home, etc.

The times that I have sat with her in the family room and tried to watch this crap makes me wonder what in the world anyone would see in it.  They are incredibly juvenile, boring, mindless trash.  Watching two people argue about luggage at an airline ticket counter is about the equivalent of watching paint dry.  Observing a house full of unemployed people scheme to screw another house member over is beyond boring.  I can't even think of a word for it.  Has the world gone to hell in a handbasket?  Does the rest of the world judge us by these TV programs?  If they do, we must appear like morons.

I like the 'Airline' reality TV show because it ACTUALLY IS REALITY TV, as opposed to all the other game show crap and soap opera-ish 'reality' shows.  That is the only reality show I would consider watching.

Not that I watch much tv to begin with.  Basically, The Shield and Reno 911 are all I watch during the week.

It is escapist entertainment. You ought to check to see what she is lacking in real life, to make her want to escape to these fantasylives?

Just about all the programs you mention are terrible.  On tv, just like the movies, just about every thing that could be done, has been done.  I guess we like to see people make fools of themselves.

Yep.
ETA - there's nothing wrong with healthy fantasy.  Just don't call it reality.

How about the fools that show up on day time "people's court" type shows like Judge Joe, Judge Judy, and Judge what's-her-name?

The level of stupidity of most of the "litigants" that appear on these shows is jaw-dropping.

I liked "The Apprentice" when it first started showing.  At that time it was about 60% "business" stuff, 40% reality TV stuff.  When it got to showing 10 or 15 minutes doing the given task, and the remaining time spent on back slapping and back stabbing, it got to be too much.  My womanz loved it though, along with every other reality show that is on TV.

It's cheap to make and still draws an audience.

I think Survivor is one of the most intersting shows on tv.  There's a lot to it.  The human social interaction with catfights, flirting and work issues; the political strategic finangling with deceptions betrayal and ingratiation, the unknown outcomes of the physical contests  which can utterly change all the calculations and strategery of the contestants, and then a more profound element of what happens when people are put into extreme (for them) condidtions away from loved ones for our entrtainment.  People walk away from the game with different outlooks on themselves and life.  It's very, very interesting to see unfold, and hard to appreciate if you've already decided it's crap and won't watch several episodes for yourself.

I thought it was an absurd show too, until I understood what it was about.  And then I saw a complete genius come on the show and use the whole show as a platform for his vision of entertainment.  You just can't see thi anywhere else.  It's a fucking AMAZING show.

And I watched The Apprentice, because Donald Trump is a surprisingly interesting and likable guy.

Yeah, but aren't those actual litigants who have signed off on their cases to have themm heard in the TV court? At least, thats how the spiel used to go. Just shows you how stupid some people are. I don't see anything more stupid on those shows that the types of complaints that we routinely deal with.

Reality TV is NOT reality TV.

It is BUDGET TV. Rather than pay real writers and actors, they send in amatuers with some general guidelines (read: contrivances) and "wing it."

That said, for some reason this horseshit seems to appeal to women especially. I don't get soeaps either.
