For all you Windows fans out there. It seems theres always give and take with Microsoft. I think I'll wait a while before I even consider Service Pack 2 for Windows XP. techrepublic.com.com/5100-6264_11-5222856.html?tag=sc |

we installed it on one of the comps here at werk for testing, boy i dont like it one bit. New firewalls blocks a ton of crap and its not the most user friendly. These SP is gonna cause huge probs for our company. It blocks our webservice for working, that means tens of thousands of morons who have no idead what a firewall is will being calling us yelling and bitching and blaming it on us. like the article says 1 in 10 software products will be affected, and thats a conservative guess |

That is an unfortunate bit of advice. Service packs are needed to help keep your system protected. However it is best to let them get some experience in the real world before you throw it on your own system. I have a feeling that MS will be revising this one a few times before it is truly stable. NO If you ain’t to bright don’t use service packs. But don’t jump in right away, wait a few weeks to install the service pack to make sure the bugs are shaken out but an eventually upgrade is a must. You will need it for security purposes it ain’t optional. This service pack is plenty stable now they may be a few bugs lurking around but most of that will be ironed out before official release. This service pack will greatly enhance security, it changes the way the Windows XP firewall operates, protection is on by default now but it is going to break some badly implemented 3 party apps. if you can handle Zone Alarm you can handle the changes to the XP firewall. |

I don't understand, what's the problem? XP SP2 works fine. Don't be fooled by all the MS haters. They have their patching process down to a science... the one complaint I have (as most people) is that hackers find security holes in their OS's every few months and release malitious code which can cause problems for many people. This service pack is focused on preemtively closing security holes. Dont freak out until you read some solid evidence that XP SP2 is problematic. NT4 SP4 was a long time ago. In case nobody has noticed, MS has gone on to create some of the best operating systems around since NT4 (2K, XP). I'm trying to start a unix/linux/windows flamewar, because I use those too and am not attacking them. |

I use SP2 at home, no problems! I shut off the firewall as I run hardware firewall (easy to shutoff). SP2 will not allow some old legacy programs to run from what I have read on Slashdot.org. If I have a legacy piece of software to run, I will used my virtual machine software to run it! Microsoft by the way didn't write the firewall, Network Associates did! |

I'm running four computers (one old and three new machines) on XP and keep it updated/current and I haven't any problems with any of the upgrades so far. Most of the patches are to fix security holes that have been (or will be) exploited. This doesn't mean that an updated system will always play friendly with your other software (that hasn't been updated). Either way, use at your own risk. |
