Try some flower drying compound from hobbie lobby, just put it in a sock tie the end and throu in an ammo can. Check it once in a while when the crystals turn blue microwave them for a min. or two and there good to go.

If anybody is interested, I think I can get some desiccant packs for pretty cheap. If you'd want to get some, let me know and I'll look into it.

Your local shoe store throws away a couple hundred of the small ones every week. Ask nicely and they'll save them for you. Since they're free you can use them by the fist full.

You could Buy a Lecroy LC584 digital oscilloscope for $30,000 and it comes with 25 lbs of desiccant.

Thats how I got mine. Only I didnt have to foot the bill.

Those aren't packs.  That is Drierite dessicant.  Made to change colors when it becomes too wet.

I've had good luck with these guys. Their prices are not bad.

Unit Paks

I use the 4 unit paks in 50 cal cans. Probably overkill.

The clay is cheaper, but the silica paks absorb more moisture.

Can you recharge the little shoe pellets?
I have a leg of pantyhose full of them. I dried them in the oven before I put them in the safe, and they all turned brown.
I haven't invested in the real stuff yet.

Not to run off topic, but has anyone packed with oxygen-absorbing materials in addition to dessicant?
Seems like a good thing to me, but I just don't know for sure.

Maybe the extra lack of oxygen would be nice for ammo storage? Vacuum-packed bags? Perhaps seal the lid tighter (with the suction) on ammocans?
