Next weekend I'm going to give our scout group a brush up lesson on map reading before going to Philmont later this summer.  I purchased some extra maps for the area we'll be hiking next weekend.  While I was at the store I picked up some lquid waterproofing to put on the map.  I've never used this stuff before.  I alway put contact paper on my maps in the past.  (WHAT A PAIN THAT IS!!!)  The stuff smells a lot like Elmer's glue and looks a lot like watered down Elmer's.  Does anyone know if that is what the waterproofing is?  If it is, it sure would be a cheep solution to waterproofing maps!

I always buy the Trails Illustrated topo maps that are made out of plastic.

I have always heard that the spread-on waterproofing cracks when the map is repeatedly rolled and used. I always use the plastic stuff, either the .mil variety if I can get it or the  clear contact paper.

I fold mine up and stick them in a ziploc. Just print new ones when they wear out.
