Are there any decent freeware message board programs available?

What kind of software would you recommend to set up a message board for maybe a 1000 people or so with pretty light daily volume?

What would you estimate as the cost of something like that?

In fact if you are comfortable with PERL this is a good resource for all kinds of scripts:

phpBB is by far the most populare open source message board on the net.  Its rather easy to install, and if its on a decent server, has good speed too ...

Babes, machineguns and beach houses ... here I come!

No, there's an email list based discussion group that I'm on. It's grown enough that I think it would work much better as a small message board so I thought I'd look into what is involved in setting one up.

Are you looking at using only a message board?  If so phpbb as has been mentioned before is by far the most popular.  Often people will combine a message board with a web portal like slashdot.org/ uses.  If that is your choice you might look at test.opensourcecms.com/ for some options along that line.  Even with a basic message board you are most likely going to need a web server (usually Apache), database (usually mySQL) and PHP installed on the box hosting in order to get the whole thing working so don't forget to make sure they are available if your software requires it.

I also recomend phpBB.

For a portal you should look at PostNuke .

Both are easy to install.
