Safety Bulletin
Warning: Improperly loading the 1911 by manually inserting a round in the chamber may cause accidental discharge. Always load the pistol using the magazine. When loading the pistol, always point the muzzle in a safe direction.

WTF ?  Why can't you manually insert a round and then drop the slide? I do that all the time !  Why does it say you must chamber from the magazine only?

I have heard of some 1911's not grabbing the case rim if loaded by hand and not from the magazine but never slam firing.

Sounds like someone biffed on their firing pin design.... too much protrusion and getting dimples on the primers like M16s/AR15's are sometimes want to do.

Never heard of an ND before. You can bend your internal type extractor that way though.

I got the same bulletin.

I'd never load my 1911A1 that way anyway, unless it was an emergency.

Of all my handguns, the only one where it states in the owners manual that single-loading directly into the chamber is OK is my Beretta.

It will break the extractor if you repeatedly load a round into the chamber and drop the slide onto it.  I'm not sure, but the saftey caution may be that the slide is slowed slightly when pushing the round out of the mag.  If it does not have the cartridge to slow it down, the firing pin may have enough inertia to discharge the round.  It may be that, or they may not want to deal with people complaining about broken extractors, and issue the "saftey warning" in the hopes that people will pay more attention.

It will definitely loosen the tension on your extractor and eventually break the hook. When 1911s feed, the round is pushed up with its rim sliding into the extractor groove from the bottom. The extract is not supposed to ride over the rim of the case.

I got the same letter, I gave my 1911 to my father a few years ago.

I keep forgetting to tell him about it. Maybe he will read this thread.
