Well I went and hosed up my system. I attempted to reformat the hard drive and it worked, but I cant get past the part where it wants the Certificate of Authenticity number for my software that came w/ computer. My Ex has all of that info, and I'll buy a new computer before I call her. Any help or suggestions? eta- typing this at work, before you ask |
DAYUM! You must have really sweet-talked them good. I upgraded my hard drive a couple of years ago immediately after having installed M$ Office 2001 and the software refused to load without a new authenticity code because it didn't recognize the ESN of my new hard drive. Those bass-turds at M$ gave me the third degree over the phone and it took me nearly 15 minutes to convince them that I was not trying to install the software on more than one computer at my house ![]() IMHO, if I buy a music CD then I should be able to play it in my car, in my house or at my office. I shouldn't have to buy separate copies for each stereo that I want to play it on...that's the way it would be if Micro$oft ran the music industry. |
Win98
My Ex has all of the literature...not calling her. For those who have done it, do I call the 1-800-RU-LEGIT number or a different one? |
You obviously don't understand that Music and Software are different animals. If you want software to be like Music CDs, then Microsoft could be jerks about it, and every time you want to use a piece of software, you need the CD inserted in the drive... Its bad enough when they sometimes need it during a software upgrade or patch. The licenses are also clear on how you are supposed to use it, which is usually says 1 machine, but this is not always the case. On a side note-- the authenticity code is actually the license to the software. Having the CD means nothing, and posting the license key (authenticity code) to a public forum, is suggesting that this site supports piracy since the authenticity code is how you validate ownership of the software during an installation. --Just a thought... |
wow, but I consider ownership the fact I have that gay looking silk screened CD from Bill's Tower with a receipt that screams " You paid too much fool" As proof that I own it, not some code that means gibberish, FYI its no piracy, the guy stated he no longer uses that version of the software he purchased. If he wishes to give it to a another member its his choice and its legal. Unless you can show me a court case where Evil Bill sued some poor sap for buying mom a copy of office 97 |

I will give you one of my older Win98 keys if you're still concerned. I've moved my Office XP and Windows XP more than one time without issue. Call up Microsoft, answer ONE question (Q: how many computers is this software installed on? A: zero) and they give me the numbers. |
You need to re-read the software licensing agreement. Its not legal for someone to just hand over their license key (especially to everyone who reads this forum), while they are still in posession of the certificate of authenticity. Microsoft provides these certificates with their software, so you can prove ownership. Posession of the CD proves nothing. By someone simply stating they no longer use it and posting their key online, is NOT legal for someone else to use it, no matter how much you try to justify it. If Microsoft gives him the key, that is their business, as they own the product and are free to do as they please. Enforcing the piracy issue is another topic-- just because you think Bill Gates won't prosecute over something you think is minor, such as buying your mom a COPY of Office 97, doesn't mean its not illegal. There are also many warez sites out there with software license serial numbers, but that doesn't make it legal if someone decides they don't want to use it anymore and posts it for everyone else to use. |
Your making me laugh, you would worry more about a giant corporation, than a schmuck in the trenches... your a real work of art. |

Don't sweat it Rezi, there are a lot of jackasses around here that believe that obeying the law doesn't necessarily have to apply to them. They'll spout a lot of righteous hooey about it and piss and moan in response to this. They generally don't pay attention and believe that the laws should mean what they think it means and not others. And also tend to assume that state laws are the same all over the place. Get used to it. |
