What company are you looking at? or you just want the biggest caliber possible?

That's kind of an open-ended question.

.50 is most popular, followed by .45 and .54, but you can get shoulder-fired ones up to .72 or more, and in you don't mind hauling it around on a carriage behind your horse, they get even bigger.

I agree.  What exactly are you wanting to do with a smoke pole?  Plinking?  Hunting?

Im pretty sure the Brit Brown Bess musket is .75 caliber or so. I wouldnt want to get hit with a ball that big. Ouchie

Just wondered how big they could get and still be able to fire from the shoulder.

Generally, .45, .50, .54, and .58.  As mentioned above, reproductions of older arms, such as the Brown Bess, can go .69 or .74.

My T/C Hawken is .50.  A patched roundball is fun, and for hunting I have 385 gr conicals with a dimple on the tip.  They expand well.

What you hunting cape buffalo?

Seriously with the modern muzzleloader designs you can get enough power out of .50 or .54 for anything legal to hunt.

I own a .45 TC Hawken and a .58 Enfield CW repro.  The are both sweet shooters.
