Hey all,

I have a Win2000 Pentium III 750 and the performance has steadly degraded. The bootup time is now exceeding 10 minutes. I run Spybot and Adaware so I don't think it's adware. I have several programs that start up every boot up and I have no idea how to stop the autoboot.

Anyway, my question: What is the best resource for improving Win2000 performance? Last year, I came across an overclocking web site that explained how to improve performance, but I can't find it.

Any suggestions?

Use the advanced spybot to take a look at what applications are starting up with windows. Every time you install something 90% of the time it sets itself to come on when you boot up.
My neighbor had the same problem and it turned out he had about 30 apps running that he didnt need.

Shut off every service that isn't absolutely needed.  Uninstall any program that you don't use.  Trim the registry.  NEVER load MS Office or any other office type applications.

Or just load Linux or FreeBSD and not worry about those issues.

It's too far gone to be worth salvaging. The easiest fix is to buy another hard drive and reinstall Windows anew on that. Keep the old hard drive as a slave (after the new one is up and running) in case you missed saving any important data or settings.

Hey, it's not that bad. It does what I need it to do, I just don't want to wait 10 minutes for bootup!

yeah but 10 minutes is excessive.  Is your hard drive almost full?  msconfig is not present in 2000, but you can still get to the start up items by going into the registry.
Run, type in regedit.  Navigate to this:  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
On the right window pane you'll see all the stuff that are tagged to run at start up.

Upgrading is the real solution though.  I upgraded my 2.8GHz P4 to a 3.4GHz P4 with 1GB RAM, it only cost me about $1400 from Dell.  I use my machine for work, at this point if I gave my 1.5 year old Dimension 8250 away plus $200 I'd still come out way ahead

How much memory do you have installed?

To edit the programs that startup with windows:
Click on Start->run
type in regedit enter
in the left hand pane click on:
HKEY Local Machine->Software->Microsoft->Windows->Current Version->Run

The programs that show up in the right are what start with windows. Some may be drivers that need to be loaded but you should be able to tell from the path in the data field what they are.

Mr. Evil, msconfig doesn't work in Win2000

MSCONFIG isn't in Windows 2000, but the Windows XP version works fine, and a bit of hunting should turn up a copy to download.
