Just curious, how many of you guys hate this slogan as much as I do? What happened to team work? You know...."We're all in this together" kind of thing. "The team is stronger than the individual." "Two heads are better than one."etc. Or am I just to "old school" to understand this oxymoron? |
| I don't like the slogan I have all ways thought it pandered to selfish instincts. Kind of the it's all about me attitude. Teamwork, friendship, loyalty, courage, giving to a greater cause I believe are more appropriate values demonstrated by our current service men and women.I believe these are the values we should be supporting in the military recruiting ads. |

I have served in both the Marine Corps and the Army. Although all my active duty time was spent in the Marines, I have been through Army boot camp, AIT, OCS and IOBC. The major differance between the 2 services lies in the esprit de corps and warrior ethos. I have found these 2 things prevelant in the Marines, but only within certain units in the Army. In the Marine Corps recruit training the history, customs, and traditions are imprinted on each future Marine along with the basic technical skills required of a private. The Army concentrates on the basic technical skills. The Army of One ad campaign plays into this. I think the recent combat that the Army has experienced in Afghanistan and Iraq will be the impetus for change from within the Army. Young NCOs and officers will no longer accept training which does not contribute to the mission of destroying our enemies on the battlefield. The American Army is the finest conventional and unconventional army on the face of the Earth, second to none, but that doesn't mean it cannot improve and become a more lethal force. A young lance corporal once said to me, "Staff sergeant, the Marine Corps might be fucked up, but we still win wars." Thank God for the American fighting man and woman, because of their sacrifices we all can live free and without fear of oppression. Except for that asshole Rene Gonzales, I believe his flight left this morning. |

There is no "I" in "Team.... (However there IS an "M" and an "E")...Which is also in "An Army of One" I hate the slogan and think it a reflection of the "ME" generation. Guess it's what the Army had to do to get thru to today's "youts" who think it's all about them. JMO.. SG |
| [Patton]Now an Army is a team. It fights, eats, sleeps as a team. All this stuff you've been hearing about individualism is a bunch of bull. The billious bastards who wrote that stuff for the Saturday Evening Post don't know any more about real combat, than they do about fornicating![/Patton] |
The new Chief of Staff of the Army is pretty badass. And the army is changing to model itself after the Marine Corps idea of every soldiers a rifleman first and foremost. There extending basic training to 12 weeks, and Advanced camp for ROTC is being reworked so that you work more on your infantry skills. There also remodeling OBC so that you learn some of the basic skills of an 11b before you get your MOS. There thought is to make it so that when your maintaince coloumn gets hit you can at least defend yourself, not like thats ever happened before I go to a senior military college, and the army slogan is a running joke especially when were in the field.

Actually that is what the Army of One means. One person being a link. Individuals coming together towards a common goal. Many individuals combined into one. Hence an Army of One. An Army with one common goal. You know individuals coming together as one. What the commercials are attempting to convey is that each person is trained the same yet they are individuals with minds of their own. They are no longer mindless drones of armies old. Together as a team of individual with one common goal. Again, an Army of One. Much catchier than, An Army of Individuals coming together as a team toward One common goal. Oh BTW there is an I in TEAM. Without Individuals you would not have a TEAM. Individual is what makes a TEAM. So that no I in team is BULLSHIT. Try having a team with no one in it. |
