Can you buy newly made AP bullets in .308, or are old bullets pulled from military ammo all that is available?

I dunno, but if we didnt have the damnable AP "handgun" ammunition ban, we would be able to buy the 5.7 ammo for FNs FiveseveN, even if we can't have the subgun.

I'm sure you can.

Just bought a few rounds of pulled bullets and plan on loading some .308 with them.

by the way, when I say "bullets" I mean just bullets, not loaded rounds of ammo

Oddly enough, a guy on Packing.org wrote into the BATF about the Five-seveN.

Guy at the ATF wrote back saying that the AP ammo was only illegal if you used it to commit a felony.

Sorry..posting while drinking...[:)]

I thought you meant cartridges...yes I have a ton of .308 black tips...my understanding is yes you can make completed rds in 30-06 ...but... in 7.62 for personal use?...some people say no...I'd welcome any comments myself.

You know what the difference between ball ammo
and AP ammo that's been in the tumbler overnight?
Unless they've got a magnet with them, neither does anyone else! ;)

By my reading of the law there is no WAY that could be right ?

I wonder if you had a signed letter from the Owen whatshisname guy, Chief of Firearms tech in your posession if the DA would still prosecute ?

Maybe the day crew wants to comment.

If you have AP black tip bullets from the old 30-06, can you load them into 7.62 to make a completed 308 round for personal use?

What I meant was..as far as it being legal. The 06 rds were ok by the atf but reloading a 308 round would be making a new ap round ..or would it?

Federally, AP ammo it is illegal to manufacture (except for .gov) in pistol calibers.  The ATF defines 'pistol caliber' as any caliber that has ever been chambered in a single pistol.  Thus, thompson contender types have added most calibers of rifle ammo to the banned list.  .30-06 is on that list.  There are two specific exclusions, 'Black Tip' .30-06 and SS109 5.56*45.

Literally there is tons of WWII surplus M2 AP(Black Tip) out there.  It's legal and about $12/100 from most places.  To load in 7.62 NATO just seat it a bit deeper past the cannalure.

.30 cal M2AP is rated to penetrate .3" armor @600 IIRC.

Federal law is that the .308 AP bullets themselves can't manufactured unless it is for military/law enforcement. It is legal to sell pulled bullets and to use them for reloading. It is a screwy law but that is the way it is.
