Thanks for looking, I'll be leaving my house unattended for about three months pretty soon. What are some things I can do to lessen my risk of a burglary while I'm gone? Anything is appreciated. Also, should I leave my Gun safe locked while I'm gone (it will be empty). Or should I leave it unlocked so they won't steal/damage it thinking it may have something. Then again, it would make for a perfect distraction. What do you think? Thanks again! |

If it's going to be empty might as well leave it open. Get some $5 timers and set them up to turn on a radio and a couple of lights at proper times of the day. Stop the paper if you get it delivered. Have your mail stopped too. They'll bring it back on the day you want them to when you return. Get a neighbor to visit the house, cut/water the grass, and park his car there if at all possible. |

If you have one of those lamps with a light sensor on it, leave it in a central location where it will get sunlight during the day, and illuminate the interior at night. Timers are also a good idea- set the TV to a talk station like FOX or CSPAN, so you can simulate someone being home. It goes without saying that the TV should be on a timer and be set fairly loud. Ditto what was said about mail, lawn, and newspapers. Why not lock up some other important stuff in the safe, like paperwork, documents, expensive electronics, etc? A shame to put the most secure place in your home to waste, even if it would just be a diversion. |

Why not make it the official AR15.Com Vacation house? We will take turns watching your house for you. I'll take the week after July 4th. You would need to leave the safe full though. |

Sounds like a plan! who's bringing the beer? |

How well do you know your neighbors? They can play a key role in your home security if you trust them enough. Maybe have one of them park a spare car in the driveway so it looks like someone is home? Do you know any local LEO's that could do a favor and make a swing by the house once a shift? |
| There are probably enough of us here in T-town that we could get by every so often to at least check the property...speaking for myself only, I would NOT want keys. Also, call the SO and ask for an "Extra Protection" during this time...they will do it for you no problem, and document the dates / times they checked it...although 3 months is a bit longer than they usually go. |
