My comp has had stability problems for about a week now.  I can usually get net access (for reference, I'm on a lan) when I start up, but after a few minutes, the connection evaporates and most other stuff locks up as well.  --Some applications like Word or Excel continue to run, though slower.  No one else in this hall that I'm aware of has had internet problems, though with my other applications failing, I'm not sure that net access failing is indicative of anything in particular.
Net access is USUALLY restored with a reboot, but sometimes things are fucked up right at startup.
I've downloaded the latest Windows updates, and also run the most recent version of Stinger, and come up with no infected files.  This has not helped.
Any ideas?  Are there any new viruses or worms going around that my av software wouldn't have caught?  THe last thing I want to do is spread this around and cause somebody else some grief.
Thanks

Hey lokt, try downloading and running Spybot or AdAware.  These are spyware programs that are designed to detect and remove programs that may have installed themselves without your permission, and are running in the background using up PC resources (like memory, CPU cycles, internet connection bandwidth, etc).  They are usually designed to collect information about your web surfing habits and relay that information to mass marketers and spammers.  I have a feeling that you may have a bunch of spyware on your PC.  It also wouldn't hurt if you got a copy of the latest version of Norton AntiVirus and did a complete scan of your system.
One last thing...Since you're on a LAN, check to see if your firewall is configured properly.  Try to take advantage of some of the security features built into your network router.  Good luck...

Thanks!
I ran Spybot and came up with 102 flagged files, and removed almost all of them.  There is noticeable improvement in the computer speed already; there is much less lag time.
We'll see if this does the trick in a while.

Sounds more like a cooling issue to me, though.

There is another feature on Spybot called Immunize. I recommend running that part of it as well.

I considered that, but the CPU is an AMD 2000+ and I just replaced the old fan that crapped out with one that is rated for an AMD 3200+.

How about airflow then? Is there enough room around the computer, and enough openings in the case to allow a free circulation of air masses?

Does it do it if you are not on the internet? I have had heating problems before but it only showed up when I was playing games which really taxed the CPU. I wonder if you have virus or program that is trying to send out a large amount of information or is trying to download a lot (ie. bookmarker G. trojan). Do you have a firewall?

OK.  I haven't had any problems related to this since I did what I listed above.
Airflow is ok
CPU temp after restarting (comp was on for about an hour beforehand) was 43 degrees C.
Fan RPM =4805
So, I thnk I'm good to go.
THanks.
