Im looking into one of these rifles for my next purchase but would like some input as far as switching out a nice scope one day for maybe a red-dot type site the next.

I dont think Id ever mount a bipod on her but these rifles seem the same except for the different flash hiders and a mount for the red-dot site.

I did notice one came with a 10 round mag and the other a 5 rounder.  Is there a down side to the 18 inch barrel?  I know this topic has beat the dead horse but I cany find any old ones to refer to.

Thanks

Same gun.  The difference is only in the barrel (shorter on the Scout) and stock.

My Scout is configured exactly like the one on the bottom.  You give up a bit of accuracy with the shorter barrel but not much.  It makes it balance and handle a bit better than the longer one and makes it more suited to CQB type situations.

The red dot makes it a deadly "point and click" interface for CQB and comes off in a heartbeat to give you access to the iron sights for the long range stuff.  Best of both worlds IMHO.

You have add a stud to mount the bipod (a few minutes with a Dremel is all it takes).

Oh the Scout on the bottom has a "California approved" brake, that's why it looks different.

So I might not be able to buy the Bush model because of the evil flash hider?  This state is one huge fun vaccuum.

Forgo the M1A & go for an AR-10. That way you can get a flattop & do whatever you want, even swap uppers totally.

I'll second that! I love my AR10T! doesn't need all the tweaking to shoot great like an M1A...........................But I still want an M1A. [:D]

Seems to me that scope/red dot mount could get awfully hot!!

I guess you know that if you mount a scope on the Scout type mount shown in the top picture, you’ll need a scope with extended eye relief.

Also, personally I really dislike the 5 round magazines.  I find it difficult to remove them from the rifle since there’s not much to grab onto.

I've read that the scout is actually MORE accurate than standard barrel lengths.

I have the exact same M1A as first pictured above including the same stock.  It is a Loaded model with a standard barrel.  It is a great shooter.  It is light weight and is accurate.  I love it.

I have never had a short barrel .308 but I suspect that it would be noisy, have a nice kick and lower muzzle velocity.

For a great shooter you can't beat a Standard or Loaded M1A.  A match M1A is great for the range but I'm not sure it is a good combat weapon for several reasons.
